You are right about the user base, I never thought about it that way. Plus (as stated in my other answer above) I missed the "usage" section.
Thanks !

Not sure based on the charts if this is still true. But it used to be that the free version didn't allow add-ons such as ReSharper. While I love the use of it, I got along fine without it as well.

The Express version has been replaced by the Community version with VS 2015.
The difference is that Community is a full version with the features of the Professional version while there were multiple Express versions (initially for each language, later for specific platforms) with limitations (stripped down) like no remote debugging and no MFC.

then why is it offered at the bottom of the site?
That's what triggered my "not sure" in the first instance.
Anyways... it doesn't matter anymore... I am getting community, I want the 2017 version

It is offered for those who anser yes to the question
"Do you still want to use VS Express?"
See also the footnote which states that this is the final version. But I apologise for not checking availability of the 2017 version because I still had in mind that MS drops it with 2015 (which they at least did for non desktop platforms).
I answered because nobody else noted that the Express versions are limited. For me they were never an option due to the missing MFC support.

Just downloaded the community version and installed it again. It says that the license is expired.
So I recommend the SharpDevelop IDE. At least it works and is free.

Thanks for the warning and the alternative solution.
I will still give a try to Community since in the new job I will probably be using the enterprise.

Obvious choice, if you have to use it at work
Install in a VM; doesn't use that much extra resources, and keeps your registry clean if you accidentally install a trial-version.

The 'license' need to be renewed periodically although it is free.
Basically you just login your Microsoft account.

I don't have one; I don't want a subscription (even if it is free).

Community (same feature as Professional) replaces "Express", which has different version for Web/Desktop..etc.
Community limitation is number of user within a "Team". If your team (or company) has more than 5 developers, you cannot use Community to build your applications.
"5" is the magic number to Microsoft "TFS online" too.

I wish people would get used to this! I'm no millenial, but getting up at 6 o'clock in the morning doesn't work for me either!

I am not a millennial, getting up at 6 o'clock in the morning doesn't work for me, but I have to...
My wife brings the kid to kindergarten in the morning and I pick her up after lunch.
If I want to get my word-day done, I have no other option than being in the office between 06:30h and 07:00h (although I could start at 09:00h if I would like to), which means waking up at 05:00h or 05:15h
It was a PITA to change my biorhythm, but I enjoy being able to pick my kid up and play the rest of the afternoon with her.
And that's the biggest difference I see with the newer generations... Even when there are good reasons to do something, they don't

Ugly American here, what's the 'h' at the end of the times mean?

"h" = hour
Probably a false friend...?
How do you distinguish between a timestamp and other kind of numbers that could be similar in the format?

The only number format that I come across that has colons( : ) in them are timestamps.
Similar topic:
Americans write large numbers like so 123,456,789.1324
The period is the decimal point.
I've seen numbers from other parts of the world written 123.456.789,1324
The comma is the decimal point.
Anybody got a good reason (other than the "Americans have to be different") how that came to be?

Not a millennial either.
I work from home. While I'm pretty much always awake at 6, I certainly don't get up at that time.
That said, if I had to commute (and I've done it for plenty of years), I'd probably negotiate so I can arrange my schedule so I'm at the office before morning rush hour (which starts before 6)--then leave before the evening rush hour.
