Does your cat ever leave the house and disappear for hours?
Look for Amazon transactions on your credit card. They sell catnip. I'll bet he's having it delivered somewhere in your neighborhood, but not at your own address so he doesn't raise suspicion.

...is going backwards? Anyone else played with the Windows Calculator lately, and noticed its nice translucent effect when it has focus? And then when it goes out of focus, it seems to go more IN FOCUS? And I used to cuss at them when I couldn't tell which window was active by the title bar. Oh, those were the days...

Yeah, I find that annoying.
Those semi-transparent panels in apps like the new calculator and mail apps use UWP Acrylic controls, and part of the built in behaviour is that the transparency reverts to a solid colour when the app loses focus.
I think it would look better if the transparency remained even when an app is in the background.

I hadn't noticed that before. It's an odd "feature" and not sure what purpose it serves at all.
It's the same thing with the Window borders which are removed now (actually they're just invisible).
It's harder than ever to get a mouse to trigger so you can resize.
It's all just a bunch of (windows) designers testing UI features that were better in the past.

I'm guessing it's because rendering the Acrylic transparency is GPU intensive, so they're worried that people will open a bunch of apps that use Acrylic components and then wonder why their GPU fan is screaming.
It's clearly configurable - if you turn on high contrast mode or if you're in battery saver mode, you just don't get the transparency, ever.
I'd love to patch a DLL to make UWP always render the transparency. My GTX1070Ti can handle the load!

Ryan Peden wrote: I'm guessing it's because rendering the Acrylic transparency is GPU intensive, But done properly, the processing will only hit when the window is resized, moved, or changes Z-Order. So who gives a sh*t? Windows 7 did it far better, even though that was when I bitched about title bars not standing out enough.

You'd think. If video cards can render a full HD screen's worth of pixels 60 times a second when playing games, there's no reason it shouldn't be able to render a single frame of a smaller window that, once rendered, pretty much remains static.

Ha! Try it on a tablet with a big fat finger ... I can only image how bad it would be on a phone.

Yeah, the result likely merits a big fat finger in response...but, perhaps a different finger than you were suggesting?

I have Windows 10 configured to show the active window's caption in a different color (otherwise it's rather impossible to tell which window has focus when they're all white), but it seems that those rules go out the window (see what I did there?) with UWP apps.

There will be nun of that in the lounge! Prioress to your post, we steered pretty clear of religion. Monk-ying around with the status quo is sin the cards.
Aside:
I know a guy from a very religious family; his father a priest, his mother a nun, and I confess I'm not sure how he'll take this kind of talk.

A rabbi's wife is referred to as a Rebbetzin.
A female rabbi is referred to as a shanda.
