I am an avid player of WoW. Yeah, it should not take 6 hours to download and install (laptop or not).
Windows 10 works just fine for me both personally and professionally, so I can't agree with you there.
Just do a clean reformat of the laptop OS. Loading only what she needs, of course. That is what I do on my gaming and dev machines and it works fine.

Well, I can't because she didn't want to fork out $180 for a stand-along copy of Win10 (and I don't blame her).
What I REALLY wanted to do was install Linux and whatever was required to run WoW on that, but she wasn't interested in a totally free OS either.

She doesn't want free, doesn't want to pay. How about a laptop without an OS?
--edit
FWIW, the previous versions of WoW ran on Linux; haven't played since the latest expansion though.

She's retired and on a fixed income. I had to buy her a new laptop because she simply can't afford it. On the other hand, she refuses to recognize that Linux is her best solution regarding monetary outlay.

From the way you word it, it sounds like you'd be installing a pirated copy. That's always strange to hear from a developer who lives by selling the code he/she writes.

No, she's paying for her WoW account (and if she wasn't, I assume it wouldn't let her download it), and windows came pre-installed on the laptop. No pirated software anywhere.
I tried to get her to go with Linux instead of winblows, but she ain't havin' it.

No pirated software anywhere. ..if it is "preinstalled", you still pay for it. Whilst cheaper than a standalone version, it is still more expensive than free.
#realJSOP wrote: I tried to get her to go with Linux instead of winblows, but she ain't havin' it. Create a bootable USB-key and put Ubuntu on it. Install Wine, put a shortcut on there for WoW.
WoW performed better under Ubuntu on my machine, while running Spotify, FF (4 tabs min), and Skype without any hiccups. If you give it a try, you'll get hooked.

I have no interest in WoW. I'm just setting this crap up for my sister. I don't have the energy to argue with her about it.
She insists on using windows.
She insists on using outlook.
She's essentially on her own.

It's a laptop that didn't come with a recovery disk.
In the past, when I bought a new laptop, I would also buy an OEM copy of Win7, and install that over the bloat-ware version supplied by the laptop manufacturer. My sister is not me, and didn't want to spend the money. I haven't even been able yet to determine if it's even possible to create one from the laptop.
IMHO, she should just install Linux and be done with it. WoW runs in Wine, and the only other stuff she does is email and web, so it ain't like she needs Windows.
Once again, it's her laptop, and I can only suggest stuff.

If I understand correctly, you would not need a recovery disk !

What if you had to get a new hard drive, and thus, no OS, and thus, no internet connection?
It's cool if they want to consume 8gb on a hard drive for a recovery partition, but that plan falls apart in the scenario described above.
I went to the dell site, and it looks like she can order some sort of recovery media, but that's up to her.
I still say Linux is her best bet, given her lack of income.

If the system doesn't come with its own set of recovery discs, it probably includes a utility to burn your own. It wouldn't surprise me if there were a number of discs for the OS itself, and then an "Apps and drivers" disc.
If you don't install any of those apps from the last disc, and only selectively install the drivers that Device Manager can't automatically detect/setup, you may end up with a relatively clean system. The bloatware generally comes from that last disc.
Of course, YMMV--I can't stress this enough. If the bundled utility only lets you create "recovery discs" that don't discriminate between the OS and Dell's add-ons and drivers, you'll only end up with the same pre-installed bloatware problem. Depends on how much time you're willing to spend on this.

i just turn all that off during the install, and it works great.

Laptop. OS pre-installed. No opportunity to turn anything off. Only real solution is to abandon Windows. Sister won't do that.

i hear you. With old win2k builds i could hack the OEM installer and remove garbage from the install partition. I don't know how on win10

Seems like enterprise W10-laptops are a lot less bloated. Dunno how get (or afford) them...

I put WoW on a laptop without issue. I don't see how this has anything to do with the laptop itself or Windows 10. (Of course, if it's something big, I make sure the laptop is on a wired connection.)

I was only mentioning WoW because it took so long to download - 58gb in 6 hours.
I was only mentioning Win10 because I decided I have every right to hate Win10.
I didn't want the laptop on a wired connection. The wireless stuff is segregated from the wired subnet in the interest of security.
The laptop itself is pretty nice, and would be an even better experience running Linux.
----------------
Sister came over and she ran through some WoW play. Her old laptop was giving here 18fps with moderately low detail turned on, and the new laptop gives her 60fps with everything on High. She's happy, so mission accomplished.
