OTOH, we might as well get somewhat excited about these icons - they brought back a tiny bit of color in this otherwise dull, flat, all-white, all-the-time, world...bringing hope that someday, we just might see some amount of sanity again...

The developers!
Because it means the company continues to need to pay them

When you're the size of Microsoft, developers seldom create icons themselves. They have a whole squad of people on the full-time payroll to do these. They supply the resources; developers just use them.

It's not just the icons - they are just the visual clue that things have changed behind the scenes. The most notable change is in the collapsed ribbon bar in Outlook; collapsed it looks like a traditional menu. Clicking the "menu" text brings up the ribbon.

Ribbon, why, I know it's the 'new' look but there is an established way Menu's much easier!

The ribbon's only been around in Office for the last 10 years or so. I can see why you missed it.

Yes, they changed for me yesterday during the company's roll out of Office changes and updates. I am sure the reason is exactly as Pete had stated.
Personally, I don't really care. It is a tool that I am forced to use, and it could be a lot worse (i.e. Lotus Notes(now IBM Notes I see), etc. )

Good grief! I was under the impression Lotus suite had bitten the big one, I did not know about it being absorbed by IBM...

I got them sometime back. I don't care about icons/ribbon, but Outlook seems to have a new behavior, at least on my desktop where it arbitrarily forgets my outlook.com password and asks me to re-enter it. If I refuse, it connects and gets my mail anyway but continues to pester me with a warning that it 'Needs Password'. Damnit! I gave you the password when I setup Outlook and at least 50 times now since then!

Sounds like one the reasons I dumped Outlook at home and replaced it with Thunderbird!

That's the most common cause I've seen for what you describe.
If you want a hands-off, permanent fix, write a script to initialise the credential manager, whenever the machine comes out of hibernation.
Also, if outlook suddenly demands your password while you're working, just close and re-open outlook without touching the pop-up window.

The prize - if you can really call it that - is that you get to set Monday's clue.

To add to what PeeJay says, the rule - such as they are - are here: OriginalGriff - Professional Profile[^]
Currently, we trying "themed" clues, where a whole week of solutions will be related. This week was "head gear" or "hats", and the theme grows out of the Monday clue which you get to set - so try to leave as many "broad topics" as possible or it gets really hard to set a clue on Friday!

Thank you.
So when I set Monday's, I should specify the theme? Or should it be self-evident?

You could ... but generally you don't and the next guy gets to pick what to run with.
For example, last Monday, PeeJay posted
Match official backing law cap (7)
Which was "FERRULE", a type of cap used at the end of laces and so on.
PKFox then went with
Maybe a bitter top (7)
For "BIRETTA" - "a square cap with three flat projections on top, worn by Roman Catholic clergymen" a different type of "cap", and it stayed with headgear (probably because there is only so far you can go with metal tips of laces as far as a theme goes!)
But thinking about possible themes is a good idea - if you end up with a complicated clue that means "ANTIDISESTABLISHMENTARIANISM" or "FLOCCINAUCINIHILIPILIFICATION" and we don't get it, then you are stuck with trying to theme that on Tuesday ...
