It's a score system, and to an extent it can weed out the "reliable" answers from the "total idiot" answers - if someone has a good rep here, then that's probably a sign that he does know what he's talking about (myself excepted, of course: all my answers come direct from a Magic 8-Ball). If he has a poor rep, then it's likely he's spamming, or trolling - or new and will get rep fairly quickly.
Rep also expands what you can do: the "Privileges" tab of your member page (click your username in the top right) shows the possibilities.
But it really shouldn't be taken seriously - it's not actually important to your lifestyle.
Unfortunately, there is no conversion rate of rep to actual currency.

Fortunately, and I'll keep this confidential, if we removed all the point you get from replying to Q&A variations on "not doing their homework" and similar cut/paste sage advice, you'd only have about 17 points.
Let's just keep this observation between us - no sense causing a panic.

Not sure if you're being facetious or not. Why do you think people chase Facebook 'likes', or post on Instagram, or tweet at all?
Some people's credit rating could be in the dumps, but as long as they get their 'likes', that's all that matters to them.

Your rep history works? Mine has just shown a blank page for a couple of years now, so I can never tell if I got up or down votes once the "My Answers" page scrolls 'em off the bottom ... "nobody ever looks at page 2"

It works if you have the patience to refresh the page around 30 times or so.

Mainly, it works by hovering over the point count in the upper right and seeing the total.
Last month, roughly, it appeared for a while and disappeared , again.
Currently, I usually start the day with a blank screen, but refresh it periodically. Nearly every day it eventually shows the actual stuff. This will persists through numerous refreshes. Typically, the next morning, it's blank again upon refresh.
It's working now, for example - another up +5 and another -2 for that old post.
As you know more about more computer stuff than I - I'm sure you can figure out what this all means.

A lot of data, mixed with load - the query to fetch the rep history data ends up taking too long and the SQL connection times out.
So as you do more here, you get less reliable history, and as the number of active users decreases, you get a successful update.

We get those here (timeout problems), too. One is the result of SQL Server composing documents and emailing them as reports - they throw a timeout, but apparently, they succeed. Some, due to the many table and hundreds of thousands of records (as table scans) just go too far.
When the users are tired of that, they don't use filters at all and send back so much data that php throws and out-of-memory exception.
Actually, we can beat most of these into submission - but they always find a new way to mess with us. If those run out? Management will request even more complex queries and push the failure back to SQL.
I believe the operent term is "archives" ?

A few $2 winners, but all in all, my winnings are far below the statistical level they should have.
I suppose I'll just have to settle for good looks instead of money.

That QA post should have been reported and removed. It was not a question, just some lame joke.
Now you complain about it getting down-voted ?
Considering how infrequent your contributions to QA have been over the years, in my view you have no leg to stand on, let alone a soapbox.

Hi All,
Well maybe not rival but for shear strangeness 'Can I have the floorcloth, I need to clean the ceiling?', all through saying that my brain was going 'are you sure?, well too bad you are on your own'. I all wanted to do was get some cobwebs off the ceiling in the office. Why airtex you can't use a duster....

Use a carbon fiber rod. I just did that as well and harvested a nice little ball of cobwebs. For unknown reasons the spiders seem to be great fans of my old Commodore ST.
I have lived with several Zen masters - all of them were cats.
His last invention was an evil Lasagna. It didn't kill anyone, and it actually tasted pretty good.

Commodre ST? While Sam Tramiel was booted out of Commodre went to Atari and created the ST, I think you meant Amiga, I noticed the spiders I think they get attrachted to one of the chemincals leeching out of the plastic.

Maybe Commodore ST stands for: Commodore Spider Thing
