How else do you think they can keep their prices low?

adafruits prices are twice as high as anyone else. Meanwhile I've got a chinese knockoff that works fine. It's backward with these boards - the clones are better quality half the time.

That does not mean anything. Where do you think their parts or boards from? And how do you think 40 year old 'new' parts keep popping up on Ebay? Even genuine parts can be a little weird because they are very tolerant with tolerances and make a little extra profice by selling you that stuff that should have been sorted out.

I'm not sure what you mean by that. Also I thought I was pretty clear in terms of what I meant, but okay. Not sure where to take this so I'm just going to back away now.

It simply means that there are a lot of bandits out there who try to sell you low quality parts for good money. Have a video: "Fake" chips? - YouTube[^]

Indeed he does. I would bet he does not know anout ESD and what to do about it.

Not to forget your tools and your workspace. And the cat. Seriously, ESD can also cause very interesting problems even when the Chinamen delivered something that actually works.

I'm relatively lucky as where I live it's humid and we don't have carpet. We do have cats but they leave my electronics alone. =)
Mostly with my own junk I'm not as careful as I am with stuff I'm doing for work, like i am now. The stuff is so cheap these days I guess I'm not so worried about it. The biggest hassle is the mail. I've never fried anything with ESD to my knowledge. *knock on wood*

Ada does a lot of training and supplies a lot of code with there stuff. If you're just learning the price is justified by the extras they supply. Once you get on your feet you buy what you can afford.

That's fair enough - but their Huzzah ESP32 feather board doesn't work properly and they want $20 for the thing. They also don't seem to know a lot about the ESP32.
Here's what happened to one person trying to use one with the exact same screen I am using:
Nuts and Volts - January/February 2019 Build an Internet Digital Clock[^]
Adafruit staff literally called the ESP32 "weird" and "unstable" but it's not.
They don't know how it works.

I bought a programmer and motor control board from them years ago, they both still work by the way, but haven't bought anything since because of price and outrageous shipping.

yeah and those are a little simpler than interfacing with an ESP32 I imagine. I think they just rushed the board without knowing the chip.

I've used several of the Esp knockoff boards from various vendors and not had any problems, other than of my own doing.
Don't remember the site but there's a guy that has a free book with everything you'd ever care to know about the ESP boards. Not at my computer and terrible memory.
