The rain was pouring down outside O'Connor's Irish Pub.
There, standing in front of a big puddle outside the pub was an old Irishman, drenched, holding a stick, with a piece of string dangling in the water.
A passer-by stopped and asked him, "What are you doing?"
"Fishing." replied the old man.
Feeling sorry for the old man, the gent says, "Come in out of the rain and I’ll buy you a drink."
In the warm ambience of the pub, as they sip their whiskies, the gentleman, being a bit of a superior smart ass, cannot resist asking, "So how many have you caught today?"
The old man sipped his whiskey, and said, "You're the 8th"

Do you have lots of Irish jokes in India, or is this translated from some other local language?

Most Indians would not even be aware of Ireland unfortunately.
Their music is awesome though!

Don't update to the newest version if you haven't already.
I've done so last week and it's buggy as hell
It keeps removing my quick access items, especially the "Text Editor" (which has the comment and uncomment buttons) and the Crystal Reports software who shall not be named controls.
I'm also getting constant "GenerateTypeCodeFixProvider encountered an error and has been disabled" error, which prevents me from automatically generating classes and other of those quick actions and refactorings.
I've seen other errors as well, but I don't know what they were and they aren't as frequent, but annoying nonetheless.
I've also had a complete VS crash once or twice.
It really takes a bite out of my productivity and I'm looking forward to the next update because it pretty much can't get any worse than this.
I updated because I hoped I'd get some .NET 5 and GitHub support, which the Visual Studio team is working on.
I'm not even looking at those while VS is bugging me like this
Apparently, I can't (easily) uninstall a Visual Studio update, or I certainly would've done so.
Bad, bad Microsoft!

if any of this buggy stuff is being affected by the preview versions, you can turn that off in the tools options environment preview features.
I just updated and I like the new Git layout
Have not encountered any bugs yet. I cross my fingers now.
I'm sure you have seen this already: Visual Studio 2019 build numbers and release dates | Microsoft Docs[^]
Does seem like a lot of needed effort to work around their mistakes.

I don't use preview builds of VS or anything.
I've looked at those preview features, unticked them all, restarted, and I'm at least still getting the GenerateTypeCodeFixProvider error.
To see if you've also got it, in any method, simply enter:
var c = new MyClass
{
MyProperty = 1
}; Then stand on "MyClass" and hit ctrl + . (provided MyClass is not an actual class in your project).
This opens your refactoring menu and should immediately cause the GenerateTypeCodeFixProvider to encounter an error.
None of the refactoring options work after that, even after enabling the provider again.

|
|
|
|
I cannot replicate. I followed your instructions and it works pefectly. I selected "generate new type..." dialog opens and I am allowed to generate a new type for MyClass. no errros.
if you run VS 2019 as Admin, does that help? I don't run as admin, I was just curious.
|
|
|
|
|
I'm not running as administrator, but I just tried that.
I don't even get to the error as VS is hanging while "Gathering suggestions - Waiting for the solution to fully load" when I press ctrl + .
After cancelling I didn't see the error, but it didn't work either.
Upon trying again I got an empty context menu
Ultimately, the error showed up again.

I don't even trust those. I run windows in a VM and I freeze/save state on it.

AFAIK VS2019 license does not allow to be ran on virtualized systems.

They can either deal with it or lose a customer. Windows isn't stable enough to run outside a VM.

Do you have a reference to that?
I can't see anything in the VS2019 licensing guide that prohibits it being run on VMs in general. The guide can be seen here: https://visualstudio.microsoft.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/Visual-Studio-Licensing-Whitepaper-Mar-2020.pdf[^]
The only VM limitation for VS2019 I can find is this (which I find rather odd):
Quote: Visual Studio subscriber software may no longer be run on dedicated hosted cloud services offered by the following public
cloud providers as of October 1, 2019.
Alibaba, Amazon (including VMware Cloud on AWS), and Google
This change won't impact the use of existing software versions under licenses purchased before October 1, 2019, but will
impact licenses purchased on or after October 1, 2019. Use on Azure (multi-tenant or dedicated hosts) continues to be
permitted during the term of a Visual Studio subscription.
For more information please refer to the following licensing news article: https://www.microsoft.com/enus/licensing/news/updated-licensing-rights-for-dedicated-cloud

No reference, I read it "en passant" on Friday while downloading VS. Can't point to it... it was in the licensing section of VS site on MS though.

Not seeing what you see but I have been getting those "something went wrong, save that ugly mess you are creating and restart Visual Studio"
Add a feature, fix a bug and add 3 new ones.
If you can keep your head while those about you are losing theirs, perhaps you don't understand the situation.
|
|
|
|

I got it sometimes, but now I get it consistently.
At least it's consistent now, so maybe this is the actual intended behavior
