Not quite. It's still the same Windows, but it now has a Linux subsystem[^], which allows you to run a bash shell[^] (assuming you've installed it).
It's "based on Linux" in the same way that Wine is "based on Windows".

Now that is making me grateful that I am not in control of our upgrade, from Windows XP to Windows 10.

That'd be an outright replacement (repave/reinstall), as there's no upgrade path going from XP to 10. Or Vista to 10, for that matter.
Besides, those machines running XP must be so old, they're probably not worth trying to run Windows 10 on them.

Yes we are replacing the machines outright BUT, the software on the other hand is also older than XP

so updating a working machine to something that doesn't is an upgrade?
but OTOH updating a government department to one that can't get any work done matters why?

For all the new neat features of the site. I actually find it way more usable, intuitive and involving. The "Questions" block in the home page right after the latest posts is useful - I answered a question today after years I did not since QA section is the subtitle of Doom II and I avoid it like STDs;
The "Follow" button is so indispensable that it's hard to think CP without it - in fact I lost the last Maunder's interview on code parallelization and only saw it yesterday!
Overall the site is better than it used to be, so thanks @chris-maunder!

Why I can't understand is why the basic forum format/layout on CP - which I like in compact/normal mode - is not the norm for forums everywhere. It is so much easier and nicer to use and follow threads on than any other, yet CP is the only place that uses it, AFAIK.
Having said that... I've suggested this layout to a couple of clients, and they seem to prefer the usual flat format you see everywhere. Ugh. People are weird.

Once upon a time I too used CP in the flat format. When I tinkered and discovered Compact/Normal I never looked back.

We use it internally - it was not a simple thing to implement and ours is nowhere near as functional as CMs. The users love it naturally.

I have been using it for a while to keep up with articles from certain authors. We have some really talented and prolific authors and the follow system lets me track whenever they release new articles.

I used to be flooded by completely uninteresting (for me) articles so much that it was months since the last time I looked in the "Articles" division of the home page. The filters resetted randomly, most of them are too coarse, and when filtering QA the filter would stay in memory and apply to the articles.
Other than that there are authors - some authors regularly publish about things I'm interested to: internals, assembler, math, algorithms. Having them mixed together with all the bloat of TheNewFramework(tm) meant that I almost always lost their new content. Now CP home page is actually meaningful to me, a real center of navigation for the whole site.

Thanks for the feedback. @matthew-dennis did most of the heavy lifting on this one. We should write up the system one of these days. Maybe when it's finished

So if I invite Matthew out for a beer instead of you, will he turn up? Last past your schmiddy of shandy limit and maybe make it into double figures with me?
