Or rather, books. (The guide is considered the longest trilogy in history, filling four volumes.)

That said, I fully agree with you. In the written story, you will find loads of funny details, descriptions and thoughts that simply can't be transformed into a screen story. Escpecially not when the story fills four volumes and the movie fills 110 minutes.

In a few, exceptional cases, movies based on novels do add something extra, but at least 98% looses a whole lot going from book to screen. Maybe most actions can be transferred, and I guess that is what the movie audience is looking for. What you loose is the rest, that which goes beyond visible, physical actions. (If a movie maker tries to convey something beyond action, the movie is quickly labeled as 'artsy', or even 'European', and rejected by the general audience Smile | :) )

Edit: I forgot about the fifth volume of the trilogy. Smile | :)
