Yes, I quite agree, but wouldn't it be better to just state that the problem exists rather than give people enough detail to exploit it? They may not have sold the information to dodgy parties but it would seem that they have shared knowledge that in all probability will be used maliciously by the very same people that they haven't sold it to.

Not quite. A good service record on a car is an important detail. On most cars scheduled service and repairs by authorised agents is probably the best way to judge a car. That statement can be deconstructed also but as a general principle it holds up.
