R was one of such languages, which decreases the amount of code to be written to perform data analysis, it is still a wrapper around C. I wonder if this is also a wrapper only. Increasing performance could have just require a few more CPU cores, only.

When these types of studies are done, does anyone ever deconvoluted the data for the fact that the lifestyle difference of readers vs. non-readers may account for it all and the reading is merely an incidental artifact?
I guess that might screw up the chances of another research grant.

yes good point ... probably the "whole package" counts in advantage of the "reader types" of people, and reading would indeed not be a cure for smoking
