yeah, no more bogus complaining... not that it'll really stop...

Of course, now the people who liked the charms bar -- they will come out of the woodwork -- will complain that it's gone.

maybe, but not to the ferocity and extent of complaining about the start screen/"lack of start menu". (when it was staring them in the face...)

Microsoft loves Linux, is adopting Docker for its servers, and just bought Revolution Analytics, the biggest open-source R statistical language company. This is not your dad's Microsoft. "There is this thing called the GPL, which we disagree with … nobody can ever improve the software."

What would it take to achieve a two-order-of-magnitude change in software development pace? The boldness of the target dwarfs the common quibbles about syntax, semantics, and maybe even the dynamic vs. static typing debate.

Story Studio is the company’s internal team exploring what it calls 'VR cinema'.
Over/under five years before Christopher Nolan makes a VR movie on Oculus?

The stories are numerous, yet extreme, and thus widely covered. You’ve probably heard at least a few. I'll let you know in a sec. I just have to check a few sites first.

Honestly, if you are interested in how the Internet has affected and affects us you should read the fantastic book, The Shallows: What the Internet Is Doing To Our Brains, by Nicholas Carr (amazon link)[^].
It is a very balanced view of how it has affected our attention span, our thinking modes, etc.
It's based upon scientific research and the author keeps a balanced view -- he's not a luddite.
It is so good and goes through so much history of learning, media, how our brains work etc, that I read it twice. Fantastic.

Looks interesting. I will have to get a copy sometime soon.
Not online, though. I like having an actual book in my hands.
What do you get when you cross a joke with a rhetorical question?

Interesting that you said that. One of the studies revealed by the book is related to reading on the Internet vs. printed materials.
Because your brain is distracted by links that could possibly be clicked you don't absorb the material as much as you would if you were read printed materials. I'm summarizing but when you read the study in the book I believe you'll be amazed. It has to do with how executive brain function is trying to use self control (to not click links and continue reading) and that continually (unbeknownst to ourselves) challenges the brain to focus and remember and learn.

fyi: Carr's 2008 essay in The Atlantic, "Is the Internet Making Us Stupid?," is available on-line: [^].
While I am not a Carr "groupie," I find his writing often eloquent, and thought-provoking, even if he is, often, playing the same melody over-and-over. His blog is interesting: [^].
Yes, I am an internet addict, but my heart belongs to ... printed books.
«I'm asked why doesn't C# implement feature X all the time. The answer's always the same: because no one ever designed, specified, implemented, tested, documented, shipped that feature. All six of those things are necessary to make a feature happen. They all cost huge amounts of time, effort and money.» Eric Lippert, Microsoft, 2009

UC Irvine and Australian chemists have figured out how to unboil egg whites – an innovation that could dramatically reduce costs for cancer treatments, food production and other segments of the $160 billion global biotechnology industry, according to findings published today in the journal ChemBioChem. Fine, but if you lot find a way to un-bacon ham and ruin my breakfast, I will be upset.

OTOH if you find a way to unburn bacon you might cause the biggest drop in the number of justifiable homicides world wide in living memory.
Did you ever see history portrayed as an old man with a wise brow and pulseless heart, waging all things in the balance of reason?
Is not rather the genius of history like an eternal, imploring maiden, full of fire, with a burning heart and flaming soul, humanly warm and humanly beautiful?
