Google has now released Bazel under beta to allow engineers to build server and client software for Android and iOS whilst avoiding some of the usual issues. "We're building the perfect beast"

Microsoft has confirmed that Windows 10 is being downloaded to computers whether or not users have opted in. It looks like you have available disc space, would you like help with that?
|
|
|
|
|
No, it won't; saw this coming, and since I'm on a 3G network with a limited amount of data that I'm allowed to download each month, this 'update' would be rather ruddy expensive.
Thanks Windows; it was a fruitful relation, but it seems our paths need to diverge.

Are they really that stupid? It will leave to so much cases at the jury...
And probably to a lot of cases of 'leaving for good'...
I never understood the arrogance than can lead to such a decision to use my! computer as it was a Microsoft extension, nothing more...
Skipper: We'll fix it.
Alex: Fix it? How you gonna fix this?
Skipper: Grit, spit and a whole lotta duct tape.

Does anybody know the KB number for this one?...I'd like to change it to 'Hide'
I didn't think they could get more arrogant than they were during Ballmer, I guess I was wrong.

This might cover[^] the right numbers.
Yeah, the Windows team is isolated from arrogance-removal (or possibly they just have a generator in the basement).
Ah, trust the good folk at Ars to have it figured out[^].

It says the offending update is KB 3035583, which we've known for a while was nagware to upgrade to Windows 10...it looks like it is even more sinister than we first thought!
Ah well, I have it hidden, already and I have Automatic Updates turned off, so I'm safe.
Thanks for the link!
Update: According to the article, here are the updates you have to block in both Windows 7 and 8.x:
Windows 7:
3035583
2952664
3021917
Windows 8.x:
3035583

Yep, coming September 22 to a hard drive near you.
Hopefully we can find the KB numbers to turn that off too

Microsoft announced this morning the official launch date for the long-anticipated new version of Microsoft Office: Office 2016 will be broadly available starting on September 22, the company says. Now with... uhm, well there has to be something in there worth an upgrade, right?

Are there any pre-made VMs I could give it a fiddle in?
I can use a work discount to get a copy for $10; but having rolled back from 2013 to 2010 over a boneheaded regression in Outlook* I want to try it first and (as always) an an infinite slacker. Downloading and double clicking a VM image with it pre-installed would be the easiest option, so that's what I want.
- The hard coded can't be changed window for the appointment sidebar was reduced from 1 month to 1 day (later patched up to a week in the face of user revolt); something that only an MS PM whose entire life is scheduled into 30 minute meeting would think is a good idea.

Firstly this isn't the best place to put this discussion as its more for people to place industry news items.
Secondly I personally would look at this from 2 directions
1. Which has the most job opportunities in your area.
2. Which do you enjoy more.
But choosing either role has opportunities for career progression.

How many times has Microsoft "innovated" too early.
The one that gets me the most is single-sign-on. Everyone signs on with Google or Facebook these days, but who remembers .NET Passport?

Thank God OAuth and OpenID are so much better :P
(Actually they are trivial nowadays, but back-in-the-day...)
I was thinking more along the "OMG MS is gonna OWN me!" rants, and the legal challenges, and the FUD, and all the running around like headless chickens.
Until we all realised that single-sign-on is really, really convenient.

Yup. Until a few years ago, my standard rejoinder to anyone who was arguing OAuth/OpenID were better than passwords was to take a look at how their Mom would react if she tried to create a Stack Overflow account. Initially it was an unholy cluster elephant involving a popup window and copy/pasting a magic URL around. (I picked on SO mostly because at the time it was probably the best known user of the tech among developer sites, and has a user experience so awful it'd scare 90% of mundanes away before they had created their account).
Yeah the tech Just Works (tm) now; but the interval from the initial hype to that point was many years long.
