[^]Quote: Samsung is using a new 7.3-inch Infinity Flex Display that allows the phone itself to have a tablet-sized screen that can be folded to fit into a pocket. The main display is QXGA+ resolution (4.2:3), and when it’s folded, a smaller 4.6-inch HD+ (12:9) display is used for the phone mode. Samsung is using 512GB of Universal Flash Storage 3.0 (eUFS) for fast speeds, alongside a Qualcomm 7nm octa-core processor and 12GB of RAM. Samsung has even built two batteries for its Galaxy Fold, that are separated by the fold but combined in the Android operating system to represent a total of 4,380 mAh. [^]Quote: Samsung put on a literal show on Wednesday, streaming the unveiling of its newest line of smartphones online for the world to see. The most startling new development in its line is the Galaxy Fold, a smartphone that literally folds into a tablet and back again, which would allow the user to view three apps at once, which is nothing compared to the Fold's six — yes, six — built-in cameras.

When I first saw folding mobile devices I thought "That's just a gimmick" but having seen this I have changed my mind and think that these could fill that gap of not having to buy a tablet and a phone.

But you can get a tablet and a phone for less than $2k.

Eventually perhaps. We're several generations away from that point though. Currently they're not just stupidly expensive, but to keep the fatness in check they're using a single fold which means either a squarish tablet screen, or an unreasonably wide and short phone screen. Getting reasonable aspect ratios in both modes is going to need a 3 or 4 panel folding setup. To avoid being fatter than a book that's probably going to require wireless everything (as in too thin for a USB port) and a major hit on camera optics; or one normalish thickness slice and several extremely thin ones. The latter opens the room for major bending problems.

Is not rather the genius of history like an eternal, imploring maiden, full of fire, with a burning heart and flaming soul, humanly warm and humanly beautiful?

I find it telling that Samsung itself doesn't mention the size or weight of the thing.
iPhone X is 174g, 7mm thick
Samsung S9 is 163g, 8.3mm thick
Huawei Mate X is 295g, 11mm thick
Samsung Fold is probably well over 300g, 17mm thick
That's getting silly chunky. I'm going to wait until a design comes out that actually makes sensible use of the technology: foldable and slim so it actually fits in my pocket, but then it folds out to be a nice, spacious size for use when seriously working.
I don't need 6 cameras. I don't need 3 screens. Just a front and back screen, with the back screen blank until I unfold it then it comes to life to extend the front screen. Best of both worlds. The camera will sit in the notch, natch!
cheers

@ChrisMaunder These days, I don't even want pockets
What I do want is an affordable two screen device about A3~A4 paper size that folds up. One screen OLED quality, the other lower-fi, or even e-ink. Windows full-on, run different apps in each screen, or allow one app to use both. Cellular, wi-fi, lotsa ports, 12+ hour battery life. Disable either screen depending.
Thickness and weight don't matter, for me.
cheers, Bill

To help its customers ensure the open-source software they use doesn’t pose licensing or vulnerability risks, CAST Software this week announced a partnership with Software Heritage under which CAST will create a provenance index of the heritage’s repository. Optical illusions, images that deceive the human eye, are a fascinating research topic, as studying them can provide valuable insight into human cognition and perception. Researchers at Flinders University, in Australia, have recently carried out a very interesting study using a computer vision model to predict the existence of optical illusions and the degree of their effect. Finally, the computers can decide once and for all if it's a rabbit or a duck

If it walks like a rabbit and quacks like a duck, it is evidently a qubit. Just the killer application quantum computing has been waiting for.

Oh, now you've got me thinking of tasking an AI to recognise what is and what is not an optical illusion, and why!
Damn, I'll enjoy that, when I get around to working on it.

A new platform developed by MIT and Harvard University researchers ensures that web services adhere to users' preferences on how their data are stored and shared in the cloud. "I am Vinz, Vinz Clortho, Keymaster of Gozer. Volguus Zildrohar, Lord of the Sebouillia. Are you the Gatekeeper?"
It just needs everything to be re-written, and you still have to trust the devs to follow the policies you've accepted. Yeah, this is practical.
