Little off-topic: it's a bad habit to use literals in the sql statement. Use parameters instead.

I do not know how to use parameters in this case.

ok, you may encounter a conversion problem. If you're using literals (which I do not encourage at all) you would have a query like

select ...
from   ...
where CONVERT(datetime, '07/01/2009 11:59:16', 101) between date1 and date2

You can test this for example like this:

select * 
from  sysobjects 
where CONVERT(datetime, '01/07/2009 11:59:16',101) -- now
between GETDATE()-1  -- yesterday
and     GETDATE()+1  -- tomorrow

Notice that the format is mm/dd/yyyy. if you want to use dd/mm/yyyy, you should use British/French format:

CONVERT(datetime, '07/01/2009 11:59:16', 103)

However you won't have these problems at all if you use parameters. Then your query would look like

select ...
from   ...
where @SomeDateParameter between date1 and date2

There are good examples in BOL: SqlParameter[^].

I had a feeling it was wrong. Thanks for correcting! It's been over 20 years I studied french and never used it after that so I guess I have forgotten about everything Smile | :)

You can use the Management Studio using restore window or using T-SQL: RESTORE HEADERONLY[^]

It's been years since I last used that but I remember the command doesn't restore the log but only reads and returns the header information (same as the restore window does when you point out a backup file without actually restoring).

Of course for security reasons, you can take the file into another machine and test the command there.

I am using when then case in my query.It is working properly when I check string value or null Values.But now I want to check greater than statement.But when use greater than then it shows error
Incorrect syntax near >

I am using when then as follow

case Actual_Bal when Bal>Actual_Bal then Actual Bal else Actual_Bal end Actual_Bal

Is it possible.

Yes,its possible but your sttament makes no sense and looks like it has several syntax errors anyway.

If you want to use Bal if its greater than Actual_Bal you need this

case when Bal > Actual_Bal then Bal else Actual_Bal end Actual_Bal

Hi All,

This message is related to SQL Server.
I worked on restoring single database through the backup file.

Now I have a backup file(.bak) of the complete Server databases.
I have followed the same steps to restore it. But unable to do it Cry | :((

Also tried with the following T-SQL statement.

RESTORE FILELISTONLY
FROM DISK = 'C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Desktop\DB BackUps\restoreDb\restoreDb.bak'

RESTORE DATABASE restoreDb
FROM DISK = 'C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Desktop\DB BackUps\restoreDb\restoreDb.bak'
WITH REPLACE,
MOVE 'restoreDb' TO 'C:\MSSQL\DATA\restoreDb_Data.MDF',
MOVE 'restoreDb' TO 'C:\MSSQL\DATA\restoreDb_Log.LDF'

It was throwing an error.

Please help me out in this.

I have a table with the following data

I want to eliminate rows 4,5 bcoz we have the same info in row 1,2 respectively. Just payable, receivable amnts are interchanged. how can I get it. Please give me some Idea.

I don't understand - is there a constraint preventing you from deleteing the data ?

if not, I'd make a backup of the table, then

delete from <table> where row in (4,5);

you don't say which database/sql you're using, so Im assuming your sql allows the 'in (4,5)' - not sure which standard it is ...

I am using sql server database. The data which I have given is from view not from table (sorry for mentioning it as table). What I exactly need is ,

I want to exclude redundant data while displaying, here when Bank '1' is payable "xxx" amnt to Bank '2', and receivable 'yyy' from bank '2', then bank '2' is receivable 'xxx' from bank '1', and payable 'yyy' to bank '1'.
Hence my report should consists of either bank '1' info, or bank '2' info. In the same manner all banks info in one query.And field 'Row' is not a column. That I hav given for referance purpose.

If I inderstood you corectly, you want to eliminate rows 4 and 5 because the transfer is in opposite order base on bank id's and amounts. If that's correct you could write something like:

select *
from tablename t1
where not exists (select 1
                  from  tablename t2
                  where t2.paidbankid = t1.issuedbankid
                  and   t2.payable    = t1.receivable
                  and   t2.receivable = t1.payable)

I want retain Rows(1,2). With ur query Rows (1,2,4,5) are getting eliminated. As rows 4,5 are having same data in other way I don't want to display it. If I show relation b/w Bank 'm' & 'n' I need not to Display the same relation b/w 'n' & 'm'.
