I bet that a person who takes the time to read Chris's 'How to get an answer to your question' topic would also be the type of person who uses Google before asking dumb/lazy questions. What might be better, but definitely more difficult to create, is a script which analyzes a posting and automatically rates it with a '1' if it detects that the question is dumb.

I have an app that connects to a MySQL DB on a site that doesn't have SSL. Is there a way to create a secure connection so query strings and passwords aren't vulnerable?
Maybe encrypt on the user side and descrypt on the server side, but how should I set up the relay?
Any help is appreciated!

I have created a report in SRS 2000 that prompts for a value before running the report. It requires the 'full name' for the report to produce data.
Is there a way to allow use of a wildcard in this prompt? I have tried several methods with no results.

I am trying to fill a DataTable with data from sql databae by using Background worker but it throws an exeption (calling it from the main thread works fine). I have read that BackgroundWorker can be used for database operations but can't find any examples. Here is the code:
Dim conn As SqlConnection = _
New SqlConnection(connectionString)
Dim command As New SqlCommand(cmd, conn)
Dim adapter As SqlDataAdapter = New SqlDataAdapter()
adapter.SelectCommand = command
Dim table As New System.Data.DataTable
table.Locale = System.Globalization.CultureInfo.InvariantCulture
adapter.Fill(table) ' the exeption is thrown here
What should I do? Please help.

Message="Could not locate entry in sysdatabases for database 'System'. No entry found with that name. Make sure that the name is entered correctly."
And I'm sure that there is no problem with the SQL because it works fine when I call it from the main thread (but in that case my application is frozen untill it reads data and I'm trying to avoid that).
The same thing happens when I use SqlDataReader. command.ExecuteReader() throws the same exeption.

If the exception is something like "Cross thread UI operations are not allowed", it means that you are trying to update the UI (directly or indirectly) from the background worker thread. If that's the exception you're getting, use Invoke or BeginInvoke[^] to do the update from the UI thread.

I am not updating UI. All I'm doing is creating SqlConnection, SqlCommand and DataTable and filling DataTable with adapter.Fill(table)
The same thing happens when I use SqlDataReader. command.ExecuteReader() throws the same exeption.

In VC 6.0 you can create/ generate MakeFile of your project, but it seems
this option is not there in VSIDE .NET 2003. Anybody know how to create the
makefile of your project or solution ?

I am using a Windows TextBox control, and I need to be able to programmatically scroll the contents. There doesn't seem to be any public methods in the TextBox class for doing this. I need to be able to tell the TextBox to scroll its contents up or down without relying on the user clicking the scrollbar. Is this possible?

You could try to use SelectionStart in conjunction with ScrollToCaret but you would have to calculate yourself what index to use.

Well, I was hoping for some secret trick that might be a little less kludgy. Also, I'm using TextBox, not RichTextBox, and I don't believe TextBox has a ScrollToCaret method. But thank you for your reply. Any other ideas?

Sorry, you're right--I missed it the first time. I tried this, and it does work, but the big challenge, as you suggested, is calculating where to put the caret to get the desired behavior. Thanks for the help.

I have created an application using asynchronous sockets that starts a local server, allows clients to connect to it. When the server starts, it creates an inherited version of my client class to create a connection to a unix server. There is no real difference in the connection, only the way data is handled when it comes back. When the server starts, the unix client creates a connection through to the remote point, sends a message and receives a response. This works fine. When my windows based client connects to the server, it sends a message on connect as well, the server receives this and then forwards a message to the unix client to tell it to forward a wakeup to the unix system. On receipt of the message back from unix acknowledging this, the server crashes with the following message.

There is no indication of whereabouts in the program this happens, and the only other references to this problem I can find (forums.microsoft.com/msdn) have either no solution, or the solution makes no sense within my application.
In my send method, I set a waiting state, and within that loop I have an event in which I have Application.DoEvents( ) (I found it hangs otherwise and won't output anything until things have finished) removing that doesn't fix things. And any interaction I am having with the GUI at all I have wrapped in invoke (i only output log data to a richtext box). I'm at a loss as to how to proceed with this problem, and I don't know what I can change to fix it!
Any help appreciated.
