There are some terms in your question that would require clarification in order to give a complete answer. Not by me I hasten to add, as I know little or nothing about mobile/bluetooth applications.

Visual Studio is strictly Windows only, as I am pretty sure is Visual Basic (all versions).
There is a *nix version of the .NET Framework here[^], I can only suggest that you investigate that site and make your own decision as to its suitability for 'multiplatform workspaces'.

The normal way is by adding a "new message" to the bottom of the article. That way the author will get an e-mail notification, and might act on it.

If that fails, you might try and ask your question on one the forums here.

I write as a novice presently reviewing the basics of this discipline. An introductory book chapter states that the .NET environment provides:

Provide OO environment across the range of applications

I have no idea what a "OO" environment is and could not get a reasonable definition through internet searches. Looking for a definition from an 'informed' party. Much thanks in advance

I've been looking around CP and the .NET for a decent .NET performance profiling tool, does anyone have any links for their personal favourites? I'd like to use Ants Profiling but I can't really afford it at the moment!

EDIT: Forgot to mention that I need this for .NET 3.5 SP1

You could use free Microsoft CLR profiler [^]
or AMD code analyzer [^],which is free tool too.

Unfortunately Intel Vtune has free personal edition for Linux only.According to me it's the best profiler in the market. Smile | :)

I'm building a web based api suing the usps delivery confermation api specs. i have build my user forms for which the user inputs the name and address for the address label. when i click on the submit button it builds a xml file called xxx.xml i then need to transfer the contents of the file over https to the U.S.P.S. with a Username and Password. usps processes the xml and responds with an xml that contains the shipping label to be printed. i was never really any good at programming i can make the connection to usps in http but i'm having problems passing my xml file. and when i do how do i get the reply to show.   here is a list of my code for the trasport layer.

Instead of just closing the response, you need to read the data from it. The code will look something like:

Using reader As New Xml.XmlTextReader(myWebResponse().GetResponseStream())
    'your reading code here
End Using

'Release resources of response object.
myWebResponse.Close()

PS: next time, enclose your code in a pre block by hitting the "code block" button and set the language to vb (<pre lang="vb"> ) to get proper highlighting.

Need help for .net remoting in client server apps

Hi everyone,
My name is dinesh and now i'm doing project on .net. Its creating client server apps for cyber cafe, so i need to lock( calling the windows form which shows up with backgroud screen) from server but I can't figure out how to do this. I did my work like hosting a remote object at client that calls the method show() of the client locking form but it freezes when rendering the controls on the screen (button,text over the form).Someone please help me and i'm here running out of time and its maddening me.
Any help would be greatly appreciated and remember i also need to call the Win32 Api calls of client from server too.

ClickOnce Update Problem

Hi All,

I created a simple application in C# that displays a message when a button is clicked. I want this app. to be updated from a network drive, the same network drive that it was published from using ClickOnce.

In the Publish --> Updates window of the apps properties, it's set up so updates are checked "before the application starts".
After a modification is made to the application and I re-publish it the updated files are sent out to the users machine along with an updated very of the setup.exe file.
However, when the user starts the application from the start menu they aren't informed that an update is available and the old version of the application is ran.
The start.exe file can be ran and the new version installed then, but this isn't what I want the user to have to do. Shouldn't the user be informaed of the updated version when the app is ran?

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

I've got some C++ code to convert to C# and I'd prefer the C# to be as similar in design to the legacy code as possible (not my original design).

Currently, I'm not having much luck finding an equivalent to WSAWaitForMultipleEvents() that lives in the managed world. Also, the current architecture doesn't allow for a higher-level repackaging with a C++/CLI.

Could anyone point me towards it if I'm just not seeing it in MSDN after staring at the screen for too long, or alternatively put me out my misery so I know I've just got to go with a rethink and rework and new time estimate.

How about something like Socket.Select()[^]?

You gave me a brief glimmer of hope there that I hadn't read the docs properly and that it was something that obvious, but no. Frown | :(

Socket.Select() does only work with sockets.

I've given up now to be honest. I'll go with Socket.Select() with an internal control socket that, when data is read from it, is the signal to close down the main socket.

Not ideal, but it's a close enough workaround that it's still clear what's happening in the ported code even though the events have been swapped for sockets. As being close and preserving the overall code structure is what I've been asked to do, it's good enough.

In fact I don't know where this idea to look at Socket.Select() comes from.
When I read your post and the documentation again, nothing mention socket!?! Confused | :confused:

Anyway, how about: Semaphore[^], or multiple call to ThreadPool.RegisterWaitForSingleObject[^]?

You're closer with Socket.Select rather than the others which work on WaitHandles. I'll look into getting a WaitHandle-based object associated with a socket so I could use the regular WaitForMultipleObjects but the client's happy with the socket-workaround I told in last mail.

On Windows, WSAWaitForMultipleEvents is the same as WaitForMultipleObjectsEx().

WaitForMultipleObjectsEx() in .NET is WaitHandle.WaitAny().

when I loaded this xml file into dataset each node becomes tables with primary/foreign key relation.
I want to find out in dataset which is the master key between certain multiple tables those are dependend each other.

I'm almost there.

The problem: Using smo, I'm having trouble re-creating a DefaultConstraint on a column after dropping it.
Where this stems from: I need to change a column from nvarchar(x) to nvarchar(max).

(The ms help is useless, showing no examples for working with default constraints. No searches show people using smo to solve this.)

The conceptual problem is that you can't change a column's size if a "DefaultConstraint" exists on the column. You must drop the DefaultConstraint, then change the size of the column, and then re-create the DefaultConstraint.

Variables not shown: The variable "AColumn" below has been populated with a smo column object (Name:"SsGradeString"), and the variable "Size" is the desired size to change the column to.

The error occurs on AColumn.AddDefaultConstraint(DName), error message:"Column SsGradeString already has a default."

I tried doing Table.Alter, Column.Alter, DefaultConstraint.Alter (after the .Drop), but I get: "Cannot access properties or methods for the Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.Smo.DefaultConstraint '[DF_ADVSessions_SsGradeString]', because it has been dropped."

I had the same problem and I found a solution to this.

Our codes are exactly same.
Steps should be like this.

1) Drop constraint
2) Refresh Column
3) Change column data type
4) Alter column
5) Recreate default constraint

As you can see you are missing step 4.
This is why you are getting an error.

Use Ctrl+Left/Right to switch messages, Ctrl+Up/Down to switch threads, Ctrl+Shift+Left/Right to switch pages.
