Hi,
I am acting as a subcontractor and need to install an app in a .NET 2.0 environment. Unfortunately the only compiler I have at hand at the moment is VisualStudio 2008 Express, which supports only .NET 3.5. I started porting the code from C# to pure C++ (console app) but figured out that it also requires .NET 3.5.
Can anyone recommend which compiler I should use? Free or commercial?
Thanks in advance
Olivier

Hi,
1.
VS2008 targets .NET 2.0/3.0/3.5 i.e. you can choose what .NET Framework your app will rely upon.
VS2008 itself requires .NET 3.5
2.
all .NET Frameworks can be downloaded freely and can be installed in 10 minutes.
3.
VS2008 has Express Editions for each of the supported languages; these are free, and can be downloaded and installed in 10 minutes.
FYI: Each language uses a different VS2008 Express, making working with multiple languages more difficult.

Hi Luc,
Good tips but I have some feedback:
1. If VS2008 can target 2.0, I guess you're referring to the full version (not Express, which does not give the option - or, at least, I have not found it: the option is inactive and forced to 3.5)
2. Try to convince a financial institution that they have to update the framework of their back-end just for a small add-on... Which is why I would prefer to stick to their environment, not force a new one.
3. I am using VS2008 Express in English without any issue... apart from the .NET framework targeted!
I will try the trial version of VS2008: this may be my answer in the short-term.
Thanks
Olivier

Hi Eddy,
Good tip for future projects. My main issue here could be the license: they accept only proprietary code and BSD-like licenses. GPL and LGPL are an issue - and part of the app accesses a database (there, FreeTDS would be rejected for this reason). So I have to stick to VS200x, I'm afraid (also, I have to deliver, don't have time to investigate this time...)
Cheers

I believe the license is for the IDE and it's source, not for the things that you create with it. And I wouldn't switch if you got something that works now indeed.
Good luck

Hi Olivier,
VS2008 (whatever programming language, whatever edition) needs 3.5 on the development system, not on the target system.
I use VS2008C# Express and target .NET 2.0 most of the time. I can choose 2.0/3.0/3.5 (but not 1.0/1.1) on the project level, by going to project properties, application tab.
Not sure what the user language situation is; if Express is English only, IMO that would not change anything for the resulting app.

Hi Luc,
Then, I'll have to check again the project properties: that's where the framework option was grayed and inactive.
For the language, English is the original and, by experience, the best supported. But, in any case, English is not an issue - the framework takes care of the error message translation anyway.
Thanks for the info
Cheers

Last time I looked, you could still download Visual C# 2005 Express, which targets .NET 2.0.

hey guys my project is about how to limit the download and the upload from the internet, and it will be run on a server connected on many pcs, so the server will organize the limit of each pc, and manage the download and upload, and if one exceed it limit it sends a warrning message.
But i face a problem during implementation in c++, first i used the buffer to control the limit, but i don t know how i can know if any pc use the internet browser to download or upload and how i can get the data from the internet browser and transfer it to bytes and store it in the buffer:this is my code:
setlimit(int limit, int nbofpc)
{
Float limitbypc;
Limitbypc = limit/nbofpc;
For(int i=0; i<nbofpc;i++)>
Char buffer limitbypc;
Return 0;
}
if(download)
{
void downloadlimit( )
{ AnsiString IP;
For(int i=0; i<nbofpc;>Switch (IP)
{Case ‘10.15.1.157’: bufferlimitbypc = fputs(data);
If(sizeof(data)) == sizeof(buffer)
WriteString ("you can’t download more"); break;
Case ’10.15.1.158’: bufferlimitbypc = fputs(data); break;
If(sizeof(data)) == sizeof(buffer)
WriteString ("you can’t download more"); break;
……………
Case’10.15.1.164’: ……….; break;
}
}
Return 0;}}
if(upload)
{
void uploadlimit( )
{ AnsiString IP;
For(int i=0; i<nbofpc;>Switch (IP)
{Case ‘10.15.1.157’: bufferlimitbypc = fputs(data);
If(sizeof(data)) == sizeof(buffer)
WriteString ("you can’t upload more"); break;
Case ’10.15.1.158’: bufferlimitbypc = fputs(data); break;
If(sizeof(data)) == sizeof(buffer)
WriteString ("you can’t upload more"); break;
……………
Case’10.15.1.164’: ……….; break;
}
}
Return 0;}}
thanks

Hi,
I have developed a Smart device application with sql ce database. I have also used opennetcf dll for threadings.
When i compile i get a warning:
"Namespace or type specified in the project-level Imports 'System.Data' doesn't contain any public member or cannot be found. Make sure the namespace or the type is defined and contains at least one public member. Make sure the imported element name doesn't use any aliases."
I do not get any file name or project name for this warning.
Please help me understand what this means.
Thanks,

Notice that you will receive the error because you have not referenced the System.Drawing.dll assembly. If you reference this assembly the error message will disappear.

my project is about DSL download organiser to limit the download and upload of a pc connected throught a server to the internet, i use the c++ code, and buffers to save data as bytes in it and test if the size < limit or = but i dont know how i can know if a pc download or upload, and how i can copy the data (downloaded) from the internet explorer to the buffer, to test if the size is ok or not.
so what is the function to know if the pc use the internet to download or upload.
what is the function to add the data downloaded to the buffer as bytes.

Hi,
if you were to:
1. provide a decent subject line, with a real topic, and no "plz" and no "urgent"
2. and put code in a "code block" (which offers proper formatting in a monospaced font with indents), see buttons at the bottom,
then you might get some help.

Hello,
I searched a lot through google for the issues on programmatically submitting forms and screen-scrapping in .NET but unfortunately couldn't find any solution for my specific purpose. It is:
I want to fill in a form programmatically via a desktop program, this is ok, but when these input fields have not a specific ID nor a specific name neither the known solutions does not work. The same applies on the button control, it is not a problem to click on a submit button programmatically if it has a specific ID or name but known solutions does not work if it has not.
A further problem arises when an input field or a button is designed in Flash.
As far as I know there are two possible solutions on which I have no experience. First the mouse cursor can be attached to a ghost window in which the page is loaded and the program may make the mouse cursor perform move and click actions via the PostMessage API. Secondly, using a network sniffer I may catch POST strings to create a POST template string and send these strings programmatically.
These methods may be silly or may work, I really do not know.
Any idea or advice would be helpfull.
Best regards and thanks for your help.

Hi,
I have a small app that I would like to try and sell.
So I need a way to manage software licenses, so that only paid up users can use certain features.
The app is just a standard Windows C# Desktop app.
Does the .NET framework have a License manager ?
OR is worth rolling my own ? - can't be that difficult ?
thanks !
