I cant get Visual Studio 7 (Beta1) to generate a web service for me.
Stepping thru the wizard leaves me with a fine project.
But when I try to build the compiler complains about System.Web.Service ... It cant find any reference to it.
Anyone got the same problem...
Ive tried to reinstall the lot ....but it doesnt seem to work anyway...
Any tips/tricks ... ?

Hi All,
Have a Win98 SE / 96MB / Celeron 300A / 20GB on which have successfully installed
Windows Component update but when I start installing disk 1 I get an error msg at
the start "An problem has been encountered while loading the setup components.
Canceling Setup.". My errorlog.txt is as follows

The only way i have been able to install it is by transfering the content of the two cd's (disk 1 and 2) to a single folder on my hd and run setup from there... Try that.;)

Hi there!
Creating a web service with VS.NET works pretty well, but when you use it, it's incredibly slow, even for the most simple stuff like the MS example TimeService you have to wait a couple of seconds for the result, getting a StockQuote via the web lasts over 30 seconds (to get the quote by hand (i.e. by looking at the www.xmltoday output)only adds up to 2 or 3 seconds.So, is this poor performance due to the beta release, or am I doing something wrong? First the obvious: You know of course that the first time the webservice is run it has to be compiled? Well if you did not know that, now you do and that is the reason why on first access a web service is so slow. Once it has been compiled though it should be pretty quick.
Second Answer: 30 seconds does seem a long time, sure your hosting provider or internet connection is up to scratch? Even from down here in South Africa I can access microsoft example webservices with a max time of 10 seconds. For example I did a test on the UDDI site and it took 6 seconds, which is pretty good considering CNN.com takes 30 seconds to load through my internet browser.
Third Answer: Webservices are not meant to be performance applications. They are not meant to replace hand coded C++ or assembler modules which calculate the positon of every star in the galaxy in under 2 seconds. On my local webserver they are pretty fast compared to usual ASP code (seeing as ASP+ is compiled now) but still nothing compared to C++ app's. Also there are a lot of layers to navigate and methods been called behind the scenes when you use a webservice request.
I know none of those were solution-answers, but maybe at least one answered part of what you asked.

In my ASP+ page, I have three radio buttons for 'Vacaction', 'Paid Absence', and 'Other'. Next to the 'Other' radio button is a TextBox, where the user is supposed to specify what the 'Other' reason is for requesting time off. Following the TextBox, I have a CustomValidator WebControl that calls a ClientValidationFunction that, at this time, simply has the line 'alert("Hello");'. My problem is that right now, the function only gets called if I enter text in to the field. What I want to have happen is that anytime the 'Other' radio button is checked, if the TextBox is empty, then the validator should flag, and the error message should become visible. Here is the relevant code:

Hi,
Recently I received the Beta for VS.Net.
After installation of the windows Component update CD, I tried installing the visual studio.net Beta1 CD. While copying /intstalling files it says cannot find win32.ncb File.
Can anybody please let me know what is the problem ?

I had the same problem with the Beta1 CD. The file layout on the CD is incompatable with some CD drives apparently. The installation failed on two different CD drives because the CD was not readable. Finally it worked on a Samsung 24x CD drive.

Try installing from your hd instead. Transfer the content of the two cd's to a single folder. It worked for me.

Can someone else confirm this? I am compiling some code (not mine) that uses "_identifier" as a parameter and variable name in various locations. When using the CL.EXE that comes with the VS .Net beta, it chokes when it hits "_identifier" in the source code! 
Can anyone else try to use that as an identifier and see what happens?

I am dying to get my hands on the VS7 and .NET. My question is whether the latest or up coming installments of MSDN Universal Subscription will have beta version of VS7 and .NET.

It doesn't look like it. They were taking sign-ups for beta testers a few weeks back. There has been no indication to us as a Universal shop that we'll be getting it automatically.
I can't remember if we got VS6 as a beta for certain, but I don't believe so.

Sorry, this is wrong: Visual Studio.NET B1 was shipped a couple of months ago to all MSDN pro and universal subscribers, and B2 will be shipped to these same subscribers when released.

I think what they mean by that is that in 2002 (I assume with Blackcomb or whatever it's called) they'll release a set of services similar to COM+ that would take care of load balancing, messaging, role-based security, God knows what else.
I understand it must take time to do those things, I don't blame them, on another hand it gives an advantage to their competition - J2EE servers are already available.
PS:
I don't actually know it but seams like a good guess.

For all those who think that J2EE is new, take a look at J2EE which has only recently launched, Then take a look at MTS & DCOM - J2EE is such a blatant rip-off it's frightening. Unfortunately, anyone programming to J2EE is going to suffer from having to write too much plumbing and from having an inherently inefficient execution engine to run within.
The beauty if .NET is that it makes the whole language discussion mute - language no longer matters - some will prefer VB, some COBOL, some Java, some Eiffel (!) and many will prefer C# - it matters not, they're all supported.
What will matter is the platform, execution environment, ease of deployment, debugging, maintaining solutions and your speed to market with those solutions. Java simply can't compete with .NET - it's too far behind.

.NET will be available 2nd half of 2001 - but in the meantime there are rumors that the beta will be available from MS this month.

I totally agree. I have been playing around with the NGWSSDK, C# and VS.NET since the PDC and I really like what I see. Of course, the performance isn't up to snuff but this is pre-Beta after all.

Is there any other way to get a preview of these tools (Visual Studio/C++ 7) without going to something like the PDC? Everyone doesnt have 300 dollars for a ticket plus a plain-ticket, etc.

I have heard that if you are a MSDN Pro or greater subscriber, MS has talked about doing an August distribution of the Tech Preview materials they gave us at the PDC. Not sure if this will actually happen or not. Anyway, MS should start the beta program sometime this fall, say October-ish.
