First of all, thanx for the reply.
Yes, the purpose of the question was to: start up any application / process.
But as one of the people who replied said use ShellExecute() , should work. Didn't think of that.
The only programmers that are better than C programmers are those who code in 1's and 0's.....

So from a dialog base application you want to start a SDI application right?
ShellExecute[^]is your friend
BTW, it doesn’t matter what type of application you’re starting.
I'd love to help, but unfortunatley I have prior commitments monitoring the length of my grass. :Andrew Bleakley:

I wrote a VC6 program, and wanted to save user input password into the program body.
2 methods I tried, but all failed:
1. open exe file->find string->change string->close exe file
When an exe is running, its exe file can't be opened. So this method failed.
2.Get resource->change data->Update resource
The exe file did not changed at all, but a .tmp file is created and its resource is changed.
HRSRC hRes = FindResource( NULL, MAKEINTRESOURCE(IDR_PASSWORD), "MYDATA" );
HGLOBAL gl = LoadResource( NULL, hRes );
char *lpResLock = (char *)LockResource( gl );
lpResLock[0] = 'a';
char sModule[MAX_PATH];
GetModuleFileName(NULL, sModule, MAX_PATH);
HANDLE hUpdateRes = BeginUpdateResource(sModule, FALSE);
UpdateResource(hUpdateRes,
MAKEINTRESOURCE(IDR_PASSWORD),
"MYDATA",
MAKELANGID(LANG_NEUTRAL, SUBLANG_NEUTRAL),
lpResLock,
SizeofResource(NULL, hRes));
EndUpdateResource(hUpdateRes, FALSE);
How can I meet my requirement?

Why? That's no more secure than storing it in a flat text file. Why not encrypt it and store that in a separate file, far more secure.

Dear All.,
I am new to VC++. I dont know the difference between value variable and control variable.
Can Anybody answer the difference between these two ?
Thanks in advance...

Control variable: A CWnd-derived class (such as CEdit) is attached to the control so you can use the variable to do things like send messages to the control.
Value variable: A variable of the type you choose (such as CString ) is hooked up so it reflects the contents of the control. You can read or write this value from/to the control by passing the appropriate value to UpdateData()

Is that link supposed to be helpful? Did you read M. Dunn's response?

C++ was designed and implemented by Bjarne Stroustrup. Excel, on the other hand, is a Microsoft spreadsheet product.

4. Write a program to calculate the property tax. Property tax is calculated on 92% of the assessed value of the property. For example, if the assessed value is $200,000, the property tax is on $184,000. Assume that the property tax rate is $1.05 for each $100 of the assessed value. Your program should prompt the user to enter the assessed value of the property. Store the output in a file in the following format. (Here is a sample output.)
Assessed Value: 200000.00
Taxable Amount: 184000.00
Tax Rate for each $100.00: 1.05
Property Tax: 1932.00
Format your output to have two decimal places. (Note that the left column is left-justified and the right column is right-justified.)

I think you should try to code it first and ask for help if your program doesn't work accordingly or has bug...
You should first find out
how to prompt -- cout and cin
how to write to a file -- ofstream ofile( "FILENAME", ios::out );
Good luck!

I am writing a VC++ application. I want my exe should run in the machine only if a windows service is already installed in the machine. How to detect whether the service is installed?

I have an application that is loaded at startup. I don't want it to do certain things if nobody logs in, or if somebody logs in using Remote Desktop. Is there an API to check if the computer is locked? I know about ISensLogon::DisplayLock, but that seems to be event based. I don't need event notification though. I just need something simple like this
if (! IsComputerLocked() )
{
// do something
}

I Suppose that you could start searching for the GINA.DLL.
This dll controls all the log in process.
Hope this helps.
