Visual Studio unmanaged C++ TCP/IP client-server examples

Hi Guys,

I'm building a simple TCP/IP client/server application and can't find any examples that I could run in Visual Studio IDE. Everything seems to be MFC and it's not compiling under Visual Studio 2010 Express C++ for some reason. I'm not very skilled in the C++ area so please be patient with me. Something that compiles and runs out of the box please.

Try a Google search for "socket samples", and you should find something that works. Also you cannot compile MFC applications with Express Edition as it does not contain the MFC libraries; you have to pay for them.

It's time for a new signature.

Yes, a bad choice of words on my part. I meant that the Express Edition does not include MFC by default, and thus will not be able to build an MFC project, unless you buy MFC and install it.

It's time for a new signature.

Thanks a lot to all reponses!

In the meantime, I've managed to make Practical C++ Sockets[^] work with only little tweaking and my poor knowledge of unmanaged C++ world

Have a look at Beej's guide to networking programming[^], there are client/server examples in chapter 6.
Another starting point is the Winsock Programmer's FAQ[^], it has examples in section 6 (with or without MFC).
Alternatively use a socket class such as Alhem, Boost, SharkEngine, QT, and many others...

You need to decide if you go the low-level route or take an existing socket class. First teaches you the networking basics, later makes you productive right away. Hope this helps, happy coding! Smile | :)

you can specify a filter in the OPENFILENAME struct, for example

ofn.lpstrFilter = _T("Word Files (*.doc; *.docx)\0*.doc;*.docx\0");

But that is a whitelist, i.e. nothing other than doc/docx files will be shown. AFAIK there's no way to exclude an extension, but allow anything else.

You are missing a final \0 terminator in your filter string. The filter uses a single \0 to delimit each individual string, and then two terminators \0\0 to terminate the whole thing.

Hmm, you're right. I always specify the filter using the CFileDialog constructor, so I use the "|" and "||" delimiters in the filter string.

hi friends,

i wrote one protocal...facing problem...please help any bogy

before Lisening i am dedicating socket p.AsyncSelect(FD_ACCEPT);

i am Accepting All the Connections....

next i want to do Sent and recieve repately....but after Accepting Connections its not going sent..

i am using CAsyncSocket(OnAccept,OnSent,OnRecieve)...

Quick tip: Leave AsyncSelect() alone, most time you don't need to play with these values.

Socket objects inherit their notification event settings from the listening socket or more precisely from the socket that accepts them. If you use any of the notification handler OnSent/OnRecieve/OnClose in your socket objects you need the corresponding FD_WRITE/FD_READ/FD_CLOSE events[^] too. Until you do some superduper-fine-tuning, just stick with the defaults.

I have a dialog in my application. When the application starts the dialog size should be the the system size. It should occupy the full screen size automatically. How can i do this?

One way is to use GetSystemMetrics() with SM_CXVIRTUALSCREEN and SM_CYVIRTUALSCREEN to retrieve the screen dimensions, then use SetWindowPos() to set your dialog to that size.

Small example:

UINT width  = GetSystemMetrics(SM_CXSCREEN);
UINT height = GetSystemMetrics(SM_CYSCREEN);
SetWindowPos(hWnd, HWND_TOP, 0, 0, width, height, SWP_NOZORDER | SWP_SHOWWINDOW);

Just a comment: If you don't use SM_CXVIRTUALSCREEN and SM_CYVIRTUALSCREEN in the GetSystemMetrics() calls, on a multiple-monitor system only the primary monitor's dimension is obtained. It's hard to tell whether the original poster wanted to use the primary monitor, or the whole desktop, though.

ohh yeah, if author will use a multiple-monitor system, you're right of course Smile | :)

Use Ctrl+Left/Right to switch messages, Ctrl+Up/Down to switch threads, Ctrl+Shift+Left/Right to switch pages.
