you don't need a lot of C++ knowledge to create a great game;but depending on what kind of game you want to do, the level of c++ knowledge will be higher, mostly for optimisations and/or graphics.
What kind of game you what to do ?
the most important thing is to have a great idea or a good story ( if applicable ).
one good site dedicated to game programming is (or was )

Since you are wanting to write for mobile devices. You might want to check out GapiDraw. It will provide you a graphics engine that will run on standard PC (DirectX) and CE enabled devices (GAPI).

Yes, I am using C++ for my CE games. I am almost finished with my first, a flavor of Space Invaders!
I suppose it is really a matter of what language you prefer. I guess you can be most productive with a language you know.
However, Java, C# etc could be used if you prefer.

I'm relatively new to win32 programming and im just looking to get a small application together that causes a windows application to have a 'shade' effect when one double clicks the title bar (instead of maximizing)... If anyone can give me some tips and/or examples I would appreciate it very much.
Thanks in advance.

Will

Handle the WM_NCLBUTTONDBLCLK message. This is the message sent when a double-click occurs in the non-client area of a window.
the WPARAM variable should contain a hit-test value, one of which is HTCAPTION, signifying a hit on the caption bar.
if (wParam == HTCAPTION)
// do whatever

For a MFC application I have been using the standard windows timers (WM_TIMERS - SetTimer() etc).
However sometimes data is missed, I was thinking of using Multimedia timers.
The resolution of my PC is 1 msec (I though it was 10 msec via a timer program).
My question is: Is 50 msec too hard for Windows 2000 to meet.
It is difficult to test for missing data, but I think the Multimedia timers are also missing some data. Do I need to rethink the situation?

Multimedia timers would likely be better, however I would think processing incoming data would be better handled in a worker thread and posted back to the main thread.

i seriously dont think that 50ms could be the reason.....they are interrupts(timer) and therefore they are serviced at the rigth time.....;)

I'm getting some weird results in my MFC application when I press F1 over a menu item. For some reason, I get an error "cannot open Help" when I press F1 over certain menu items. It seems totally random. I never did anything special to make it work for any of the items anyway. When I created the application, I enabled HTML help. I've been able to change the table of contents and add help files. But one thing I have not figured out is how to control what pops up when F1 is pressed. For most of the menu items, it works fine. For instance when I put the mouse pointer over the view -> status item and press F1 it immediately brings up the status help screen with the Main Help dialogue. When I do the same over File -> open or Help -> help topics I get the error message. I'm not finding anything specific in MSDN library.
What is the trick here? I know I can handle a message to respond to F1 and have done this. But I was hoping to find another way. I mean after all, 95% of the menu items work fine when I press F1 but I have no idea what gives for the very few where it doesn't work.
Also, in one of my dialogues I have written code for the function:
HtmlHelp(NULL, HH_DISPLAY_TOPIC);
Now this will display the main help window. The NULL could be a pointer to something. I don't know what it is a pointer to. Does anyone know? How do I use the first argument to cause a specific help topic to display within the help dialogue? I've tried a few things and don't think the documentation is entirely clear on what I am supposed to point the function to. Any ideas?
Thank you,
Shawn

Hello everybuddy,
I have developed a simple dialer application that uses RAS ocx component to dial a RAS server. I set three of its properties as 'PhoneNumber', 'UserName' & 'Password' and start dialing, but Authentication fails although I am sure my credentials are correct. (I can connect using Windows' connection)
I am not sure if just these three properties are sufficient to be set, or anything that I haven't noted,... I need your gaidance.
Thank you,
- den
