Well in short terms building the release version means:
- linking with the release version of used libraries
- the ASSERT macro is disabled preventing the assertion, i.e. code written inside ASSERT() statements won't be executed and the assertion message box won't be popping up in case of program error
- no memory checking will be done in the aspect of block checksum calculations
- no stack pointer checking will be performed when returning from calls
There's more to it, but this is the major topics in my opinion.
Hope this answers your question.

I have a ODBC DSN which is configured for windows authentication to connect to Sql Server.

Well, that depends on what you mean.
Let me make a couple of assumptions:
- the port you're talking about is a port on a TCP connection
- the service is something like a FTP-server or similar
If you cannot sucessfully connect to the server socket you know that the port is unreachable and it's reasonable to assume the service to be down.
If you're able to connect to the port of the server socket, then you have to use a suitable protocol for the service, such as HTTP, that will tell you whether the service is up'n'running or not.
My point is that you need to know what protocol to use to be able to determine if the service is available or not.

What's the total number of windows messages defined?
Code-Frog:So if this is Pumpkinhead. Time for him to run and hide. It's an interesting thought really.

Just a little question: why do you want to know that ? Do you want to define your own messages and be sure that it doesn't have the same ID as an existing message ?
If yes, then you can safely start from WM_USER message:
#define WM_MYMESSAGE WM_USER + 1
|
|
|
|
|
Nope. I was just curious to know the size of it.

Ouch! I know your not asking but still there are better ways to create app level mssages. Message Management[^]
From Article
WM_USER: obsolete
Older books on Windows programming tell about how to define user-defined messages using the symbol WM_USER. This technique is obsolete. There were too many problems with WM_USER-based symbols conflicting with messages that Microsoft was using.
I'd love to help, but unfortunatley I have prior commitments monitoring the length of my grass. :Andrew Bleakley:

Check winuser.h

To get the OS version, I used the sample code from http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-gb/library/ms724429.aspx
I am getting
Error C2039: 'wProductType' : is not a member of '_OSVERSIONINFOEXA' on compile.
Error C2065: 'VER_NT_WORKSTATION' : undeclared identifier
I saw that wProductType not a member of OSVERSIONINFOEX. & VER_NT_WORKSTATION not define in winbase.h
The PSDK version i am using is 5.2.3790.1830
How to solve this issue. I want the code should work in Vista also

You need to change include directories path to point to inlcudes in latest platform SDK.
Use Tools-->Options-->Directoies .
