speaking as a self taught (or rather self teaching) vb.net programmer learning to program from a book with no prior programming experience(i'm assuming you have none) is quite difficult. and no one book is going to get you up and coding. rather be prepared to buy several books before you even start to code some reasonable applications. i don't mean to put you off. coding is great fun as anyone here will tell you . just saying be prepared for lots of frustration .
anyways, for a gentle intro to anything i've always found the "Sam's Teach yourself..." series to be brilliant. try "Sams teach yourself Visual Basic.Net in 24 Hours" or "... in 21 days" You could then try moving onto "Even more VB.net" in the same series or search for something a bit more complicated. One you find a place to start and learn a bit you get to know what you want to know how to do and the technical names for it and find books more about that.
Good luck

Get "Programming Visual Basic.NET for Dummies" mate. This book assumes you do not know anything. And teaches you like a dummy. You'll be surprised what you learn within a short space of time. To be honest with you, you will also need a great deal of time input. But it's fun.
I am also teaching myself VB.NET, I began from scratch, and have not gone too far either, but I am somewhere. I will be happy to help, that will give me some bit of home wofk as well. It's only unfortunate, until end of may I will be putting all my time in my other course that I am sitting exams for. But Keep in touch mate.

Hi all,
I am a newbie to C# and currently doing an assignment using C# about invoice application. Can any one show me how i can perform a calculation on a specific column in the datagrid. Then post the total to a textbox outside the datagrid.
I am very appreciate for you help.

One way is to use the ItemDataBound() event. This gets called once for every row on the datagrid while it is being bound. You can then access the contents of the row like this:
e.Item.Cells(indexOfCell).Text
You will have to cast the correct type but you can either change the values of the cell based on a calculation, or you can add up all the cells using a global variable.
hope this helps,

Hi all
i need code to analyze given wav file and provide data that can be used to identify the speaker.
ot in other words
Speaker identification Module in VB.net/VB/ or any simple code that can be converted to VB.NET

Good luck... What you're looking for is hardly trivial with most implementations to be found in C++. There are no "drop-in" components that I can find.
Search the web for "Speaker dependent recognition" and you'll come up with a bunch of research projects and articles, using various API's and libraries, to write your own implementation.

Hi,
I want to make a search program (for comparision statement) where my table structure is like.
table1
slno number
prod_code1 char(20)
prod_desc char(100)
price number
prod_code2 char(20)
prod_code3 char(20)
prod_code4 char(20)
now I want a screen to display all the field with blank initially for search from the table. when the user fills any one field or two fields or three, with exact value of the field in table or some value like prod_code2 is having a value in table like 'ZM/1764/152/137' now the user can enter exactly the same value or the user can enter value like 'ZM' or '1764' or '1764/152',,, the result should be shown in a flex grid form with all the columns of that row, so that the user will take the value he want .
I want the program with table security facility (i.e., no modifications to the table from backend), and as a standalone program so that it can be stored on to a cd and to distribute to my field staff.
Pl. help me with a better solution code design.
Thanx,
Raju.

kujal u can forget combobox and instead that u can use data combobox u can add this by project components microdatalistcontrols 6.0
and create connection and reord set object it has bound column listfield and rowsouce properties
i am giving you an example we have emp_mas table
so our emp_id is bound column and what we fill in combo is list field and our row source is recordset name this wil fil the data in data combobox
Set objCon = New ADODB.Connection 'creating a new connection object
Set objrsData = New ADODB.Recordset 'creating a new recordset object to fill the names of employees in the data combo box
objCon.Open ("Provider=SQLOLEDB.1;Persist Security Info=False;User ID=sa; pwd=sajv3;Initial Catalog=pubs;Data Source=rs")
objrsData.Open "select emp_id,emp_fname from emp_mas order by emp_fname", objCon, adOpenStatic, adLockReadOnly
Set dcmbData.RowSource = objrsData
dcmbData.ListField = "emp_fname"
dcmbData.BoundColumn = "emp_id"

I've got a bit of a painting performance issue with a project I'm working on.
The project has a 800x600 main screen that is filled with a custom Panel control that paints two overlapping transparent images (PNG in this case). I then have a dozen big custom button controls that sit on top of this panel. The buttons are also bitmapped and are about 150x100 in size. They all load different bitmaps.
The problem I am having is that when the screen needs to repaint, the background repaints first, leaving "holes" where the buttons should be and then the buttons paint. This can take up to a second on my machine and the effect is less than ideal.
I have already implemented cacheing of all bitmaps involved and turned on double buffering. My main issue is the "holes" while the buttons repaint.
Any ideas?

I will be very greateful if anybody provide me the sample code to drag file from .NET application to Explorer. I used this in VB6 with OLE. I am trying even with VB.NET. When I try to drag ICON changes when mouse drag enter in Explorer But I can not copy OR Move finally.
I do not know that do I need to write any different code than this:
Dim X As DataObject = New DataObject(DataFormats.FileDrop, "c:\dwg\6420.dwg")
fileListbox.DoDragDrop(X, DragDropEffects.Copy)
Thankx in advance
