setting the ip address is ok.
but to set the preferred dns server and alternate dns server through netsh is not achieved.
any ideas?

Why don't you just set up two network connections on the same NIC, and then enable/disable them depending on which network you want to use? Two clicks to change connections, and they'll hold all the relevant IP/DNS information for you.

the wizard is taing me through a couple of screens and on clicking finish, nothing happens.
i contacted my network administrator also, but he could not solve it.
remember that,

however, i got the problem solved using netsh command in the batch files.
but here in netsh, i could not configure the alternate dns server.
any ideas Confused | :confused:

Local Network Problem

hi all,

i am facing this problem recently. I am using Windows XP Professional.after my machine is booted, the local area network alone takes time (say 10 min) to load(dont know a better word) to appear in the system tray. in that 10 mintues duration, i am not able to do work on any environment.

I am not able to open a word/excel/pdf documents.When i open Visual Studio and run any application, it says binding handle is invalid.

When i contacted my administrator, he says there is virus in the machine and has to be formatted.
But after that initial 10 mints(i mean after the local area network is loaded) i am able to continue working as usual and i have no problems.And i scanned my machine for viruses.it says no virus D'Oh! | :doh:

Could there be a possibility of spyware??

What could be the problem? has anyone faced this before?

I dont particularly like to format my machine.

It's probably not a virus or spyware. After you login, hit Ctrl-Shift-Esc to bring up Task Manager. Click on the Processes tab and see which process is taking up all the CPU's time.

We has an issue around here where it was a home-brewed AutoArchive app running out of the domain login script that hung the machine for about 10 minutes.

hi,

thanks for your reply. after logging in, i find that the explorer.exe,svchost.exe (i think its the antivirus software -macfee) are taking CPU time.

I am not aware of network administration.so i need advices on how i should proceed..

could it be a problem in the local network connection?

Any suggestions??

Also i have another question. if i uninstall macfee from my machine, will it affect .NET. i heard from many people that if i uninstall macfee, it removes some of the .net DLLs too!!!!!!

why dont you disable your LAN and then reboot.
when ever you want it then you can enable it and disable before shutting down.

When this happens again, open the TaskManager and get the ProcessId of the SVCHOST that's taking up the CPU time. Then open a CMD prompt and type (I'm assuming your using Windows XP):

tasklist /FI "PID eq ProcessId" /SVC

and hit Enter. This will tell you the names of all the services running in that service host process.

Since I don't use McAfee at all, I've got nothing to uninstall to test it. It SHOULDN'T cause a problem when uninstalled. If it removes some the .NET Framework stuff, all you have to do is reinstall the .NET Framework versions you're using.

How much ram do you have?

Do you have IE7 installed along with McAfee?

If your answer is yes to the second question and you have less than 1.5g of ram you may consider either rolling back IE7 and McAfree or increasing your ram to 2g.

as dave suggested, you can use task manager to see the performance of the system in the first 10 minutes.
no sooner you see your desktop, wake up the taskmanager,
and see the performance of the different processes in live,
then you can find some thing out there.

my network administrator has some thing to advice.
he says as follows.
1.go to safemode.(press F8 while booting up)
2.go to start>programs>accessories>systemtools>system restore.
3.select the date from which, you are facing the problem.
4.click restore.
i suggest that,
you perform this activity in the presence of your network administrator.
because,
he personally must have seen your problem, and apply his intellect based on this clue.

actually my network administrator did this, and still again the same problem exists.

i did this around two weeks back, i had to restore my machine to few weeks back(i took backup of my files in case thank god). i dont know what he did but mydocuments folder contents are removed and all my favorites in mozilla and ie are lost. Frown | :(

but still i could not find the problem.my network adminstrator is determined to format my machine, and he says this is the only option.

really thanks for your suggestions. i think its better not to seek my adminstrator's advice.so i prefer experts suggestions. Smile | :)

Hello everyone...

Just a simple qn..

I have a system running on Vista Home Basic and have logged in as a user(with admin permissions)
However when i tried running a registry modification c#.net application, JIT says, registry access is denied and use ".NET Framework 2.0 Configuration Tool" to give the application permissions.

I tried , added my appltn to configure, but nothing worked out. I didnt see how could I give my application the permission.

Any help appreciated!

Hello, everyone:

I'm writing an executable packer. I encounter a problem if I compress the resource section (.rsrc) for the executables targeted on Windows 98. No problem on Windows XP.

After the investigation with SoftICE, I've found the reason.

On Windows 98, resource handling is "thunked" to 16-bit DLLs. The 16-bit counterpart of a 32-bit process must be correctly initialized to make it work, including a 16-bit resource table.

However, when the resource section is compressed, it's not initialized at all or not initialized correctly so FindResource fails.

How should I work around this problem if I have to compress the resource section?

How to find the 16-bit counterpart "module database" of a 32-bit process on Windows 98?

According to Matt Pietrek in Windows 95 System Programming Secrets, Win16 keeps a copy of executable's header in a segment known as a module database. The selector of this segment is called an HMODULE. The closet equivalent to a Win16 module database is the header portion of a program's or DLL's PE file.

His book suggested a brute-force way to enumerate all module databases. It's implemented in a program called SHOW16:

"...examine every possible ring 3 LDT selector, looking for segments that are module databases. For each module database it finds, the code looks for the MODFLAGS_WIN32 flag at offset 0xC in the module database; if this flag is set, the code adds the module to the end of the window's list."

However, I don't have the source code of SHOW16 and I don't know how to enumerate all ring 3 LDT selectors.

hai friends,
in my system, i have only one lan card.
to use my LAN i have to use on cable and one IP address
and to use internet, other cable and other IP address.
so i have to go to my network places>properties>localarea conection>tcpip>properties and change the IP address.
and some times, the system may demand restart also.
by the time, i do all these, iam forgetting what actually i have to do.
this is happening atleast a dozen times a day.
can any body suggest me any technique, like theme or some scheme, where i can pre store the required IP addresses and simply select the option, to toggle between LAN and internet.
changing the cable physically is however mandatory right??.
