I want to get a series of bridge hands into the computer. My thought is to make up a form and then have the players write into the character boxes the hands. The card values would be only the characters AKQJT98765432.
Example:
North
Spades A Q T 5
Hearts T 8 7
Diamonds Q T 4 3 2
Clubs 8
and so on... Just the part to the right would be filled in by hand.
My problem is to put together a program that can start the scanner, read in a page, look at the specific boxes where the characters can be entered and then decide which of the above characters is in the box (best match). I've got some leeway here in that all the above characters must be present 4 times (4 suits) so I could throw out a debatable character if it was matched with one of higher quality.
My question here is can anyone suggest where I can look for examples of text recognition software callable from a controlling program. The standard search for text recognition software produces Xerox's Textbridge or Omnipage Pro. These are standalone programs that come out with Word files. I want something more primitive than this so that my program can control the whole thing.

One good suggestion would be covering the use of resource files. Mainly:
1) What is the difference between a '.resource' and a '.resX' file?
2) Why is it that I can't seem to move a resource file (.resource or .resX) from one project to another without getting exceptions.
3) Other general things.....

i have a unique problem, i am fronm a load and truck matching site and our members post available trucks on their individual websites, the problem we have is daily we go to each site and manually copy the info onto paper and then reenter the info on our site under their account... as you can imagine this is a huge job cocidering there are about 300-400 postings for each member, this translates into thousands of postings a day, i can not possible get them all, i make a dent in the pile at about 400 total a day!! i need to automate this process and fast! do any of you do this sort of thing on contract, or can you recomend somone who could write this for me, our programmers cant get it to work or even get it close..... please help,

If you can't force them to agree to some common format, maybe in XML, you've to write a parser that can extract text from the HTML (it should be not so difficult, since I suppose that this kind of data is organized with HTML tables).
It looks like an iteresting job, but I'm in Italy and so it's a bit difficult to arrange this kind of work

We have a console window created by AllocConsole() within a GUI application,
and (optionally) some spawned child process that inherits that console.
The question is how to make that window somehow to become a child control of your application's main window (Or create a child window that is similar in looks and feels to the original console window).
The problem with simple input/output redirection is that you should somehow manage various text colors coming from the console, and effects like command history and filename completion in cmd.exe won't work also.
Any suggestions?
What i came to by now is allocating console, spawning a child process and then using ReadConsoleOutput() to fill my buffer with console text and then printing that buffer in my GUI app. (That works weird under VB  )
Ah.. why i need it? Just tried to make an ActiveX control with cmd.exe inside to put it onto my Active Desktop

Have you investigated using the NetMeeting SDK? It is pretty straight forward.

Hello--
I'm looking for a list control that works like the Add/Remove programs list in Windows 2000. The main feature I'd like to have is for it to automatically expand the selected item (to show details), and then collapse it when you change selection (and expand the new selected item). Adding links or buttons to the items would be very useful too.
---Almost forgot--it would need to be a .Net component...Does anyone know if this already exists? If not, it might make a good article...

AFAIK the list in Add/Remove programs is not a list control, but a HTML iframe. The UI of the whole applet is written in HTML.

Umm.. If your looking for c# dlls its fairly easy, just choose the right project type and the assembly will be built as a DLL.
If your talking about COM Dlls, its the same process I think but with a wrapper-dll.

Ok, I got ya now.
When you include a .NET DLL into your project, it is as if all public classes and types in it are in your project. (you may have to include the namespace with the using directive at the top)
This is how you get access to System.*, they are stored in DLLs in this manner.
For dynamically loading DLL's, such as in a plugin system, you only need to build an interface, and then use Assembly.Load() to get references to them. Then you can 'as' the refs to your interface and use the loaded DLL.
Things like dllmain are no longer needed, since constructors of types serve that purpose now.

I tend to use Windows as resource intensive dumb terminal that also lets me play fancy games now and then. Until recently I've been rather satisfied with that but am wanting to make a bit more use of it which brings me to subject of this post.
A few suggestions of articles I've been looking for but have yet to find:
1) Using the Visual Studio command line tools instead of the IDE (otherwise known as: when vi is just good enough for me).
2) More Non-MFC oriented tutorials (which are becoming harder and harder to come by). I tend to want to understand the Win32 SDK before relying on toolkits based on it.
3) Up to date tutorials on using the DirectX set of libraries (just looking at the sparse documentation makes me wonder why it is so needlessly complex). I'm not looking to write "mad g4m3z" but rather visualize data and possibly play around with sounds.
I would write such articles myself once I've figured the various topics out but my experience lies more in the UNIX realm so I'm a fish out of water here.

If you can afford a book get Charles Petzold's Programming Windows, it uses C and the SDK....thats it When I started Windows programming I didn't see any really good tutorials/articles that helped much; most just confused me more.
