Hi,
I was looking through the Platform SDK fro Whistler Beta 2, and tried to find any information on how I would get my applications "skinned" like the rest of the programs in Windows XP.
No, they're not all skinned. All window borders are skinned - but not buttons.
I found a good example to confuse me - calc.exe.
Checking with Depends(Part of the PlatformSDK and VisualC++), it had no references to UXTheme.dll. What? Yeah - well in the sdk, they try to convince me of overriding paint functions for all my controls, and calling a DrawThemeBackground() with a lot of paramters telling it what I want to draw. DrawThemeBackground() is part of UXTheme.dll which is the whole system of drawing custom UI's. comctl32.dll uses it. Well somehow calc.exe is telling UXTheme.dll to draw all it's buttons. But I just don't know how.
I'm not go and custom paint all my controls.

By default, apps use the v5 common controls, which don't get themed controls. You need to tell the OS to use the v6 controls for your app, which involves putting a manifest (an XML file with a particular format) as a resource in your binary.
Here's an MSDN article that lists the exact steps to take.

It's part of the resource kit. You'll need too applications. RExec and Shutdown. First one lets you remote execute and the second does what it's named.

Hi,
Curruntly, I am working on the one project, that uses low-level TCP/IP calls and NDIS to retrieve packets, analyze them, and re- targeting them to another node.
So, where can I find some information, about low-level TCP programming, packets managing, NDIS managing, ... I am tired of WinDDK, so I need some basic (not very) explanation of it's usage in the Win2K systems.

Hi folks,
I've created a cool doc/view app which will print several pages, w. page preview and all that stuff.
Problem is, that if I have to print a long document (having more than about 11 to 12 pages) the printing goes nuts: Page 13 overlays page 1, 14 is over 2. When there are more than about 24 pages, I get three pages over each other.
This happens under Win ME. Under Win2000 it works fine. I assume that it has s.th. to do with the int's in the windows API and the 32 bit border (hence 11 pages is about 32800 tenth millimeters...).
Has anybody run into the same problem? And how did you solve it???

I am trying to write a programm in Visual C++ that it transmits and receives from the serial port.The data must be numbers.These numbers i must save them in a database that everyday must have a report.I have written the serial communication routine but i have difficulty in saving the numbers in a database.

I am new in programming and noone in my school know nothing about programming in Visual C++.So my only help is the Internet.I don't know how to insert a database in an existing programm that of serial communication.This program is in dialog based interfased and the database is odbc.I also must store and the time and date of the communication.This programma is of telephone switching centre.the programm tells the microprosesor which telephones muste be connected.So i must know the connected phones and the connection time.

I would like to change the Visual Effects in Windows 2000 programatically. I know that the registry keys are changed during this process (HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\Desktop\...) but I need a way to refresh the screen like the Display Properties does. It does not reset the monitor, it just reloads the settings and adjusts the display accordingly. Does anyone know an API that will perform this? ChangeDisplaySettings is what I tried, but it does not work how I want it to in Win2k.

Actually, the proper way to change the effects settings is with SystemParametersInfo(). That API automagically handles broadcasting a WM_SETTINGCHANGE message so all windows reread the settings.

One more thing that is odd...
I did a registry diff before and after changing the icon size with the Display Panel and the results are the same as when I run my program. Fine, good, great.
But...When I click on the start menu (after my program) the icon spacing is all messed up. It is adjusted in the registry, but there doesn't seem to be a way to make it respond. The desktop icons work ok. The only thing I can think of is it needs sent an update message. Any ideas?
