Neither one of the two languages is better then the other, just different. Which one you should pick depends more on your experience with them as well as the hosting environment that the blog portal is to be running in.
If you need to host on Linux then ASP.net is out of the picture, if you also have Windows hosting then both languages can be used.
I also agree with Dennis, why write a blog from scratch. You could use an already existing blog software and expand it where needed. That will probably be more cost effective.

I know many options are available on both windows and linux environment but this is a project so it has to be developed from scratch...
I also know it will be PHP if going to be on Linux and ASP.NET if going to be on Windows
My question was, what if I have both options and I can write both languages then which language you'll prefer? which language will be fast in performance and better security, etc...
Thanks,
Jassim

What are the requirements in terms of OS? Does it have to be Linux or can it be Windows? As the others have mentioned, both ASP.NET and PHP will both do just fine. If it is not known which OS is going to be hosting the blog portal, you can go with PHP since it can be used on both Linux and Windows, however, if for other reasons you go with ASP.NET, the only way you could have it work with Linux is to have it be compatible with the Mono Project. If you have other requirements for the project, factor them in as well.

it can be linux or windows. the client is open to anything...
so what's your recommendation?

sorry but I am not sure why you are coming here to answer a question that a client is paying you to answer. the general theme of answers is one I have to agree with.
make the decision as to what works best for you. going down this path of one is better than does nothing but start these religious arguments of my programming language is better than yours. nothing really productive comes from them.
sorry I know we are supposed to answer questions as best as possible but I don't like giving you a free answer for something that you possibly are being paid to research.

The key word here is I. It doesn't matter what anyone else would choose; it is your project, choose what you are comfortable with.

What is better? Use the language you understand.

Hi,
I want to ask what development language google is using for their website?
Thanks,

Are you sure they aren't using Go?... What a contradiction!

My understanding is that the main languages in use by Google for their own internal developments are C++, Python and Java and also a language called Go which is something they developed themselves for their own purposes (I have no idea what it does, the only thing I know about it is that it includes the keyword panic which I think is just brilliant). And JavaScript of course for the front-end browser code, although they also use GWT to let them write that sort of stuff in Java. I think GMail is written using GWT, I seem to remember that's what they developed it for originally.
They also use other languages to a lesser extent, Perl, PHP, Ruby. As far as I am aware they're not big on .NET although I wouldn't be surprised to find they use it somewhere or other. They seem to like having a finger in as many pies as they can.
Database-wise, they use their own database called Bigtable that they built themselves. It is not a relational database and does not use SQL but is designed to handle huge (by which I do mean HUGE) volumes of data.

I am doing a web development project.
I have a product page which has 2 buttons. By pressing one button, a text box gets displayed and the user types in the value and after saving it the text box should disappear. When the user clicks the button again, the text box gets displayed and the user can
type a new value(like text1, text2...).
There is second button, when it is clicked it displays the text box with the value that the user typed in the text boxes(text1,text2...). when we click the second button, it should display text1, text2... in a graphical view and the user can edit or delete the text boxes and rearrange the text boxes and save the online work in his webpage for future use.
I am a learner in web development.It would be very helpful if anybody could help me with code.
I am doing in Html, Css, Javascript, Php and Mysql.

I am trying to implement jQuery Show / Hide Plugin
I have tried enough to rectify the problem, but it doesn't work on IE6, where as it works like a charm on other browsers.
plugin
(function ($) {
02 $.fn.showHide = function (options) {
03
04
05 var defaults = {
06 speed: 1000,
07 easing: '',
08 changeText: 0,
09 showText: 'Show',
10 hideText: 'Hide',
11
12 };
13 var options = $.extend(defaults, options);
14
15 $(this).click(function () {
16
17 var toggleClick = $(this);
18
19 var toggleDiv = $(this).attr('rel');
20
21 $(toggleDiv).slideToggle(options.speed, options.easing, function() {
22
23 if(options.changeText==1){
24 $(toggleDiv).is(":visible") ? toggleClick.text(options.hideText) : toggleClick.text(options.showText);
25 }
26 });
27
28 return false;
29
30 });
31
32 };
33 })(jQuery);
The usage
$(document).ready(function(){
02
03 $('.show_hide').showHide({
04 speed: 1000,
05 easing: '',
06 changeText: 1,
07 showText: 'View',
08 hideText: 'Close'
09
10 });
11
12 });
HTML
01 <a href="#" class="show_hide" rel="#slidingDiv">View</a><br />
02 <div id="slidingDiv" style="display:none;">
03 Fill this space with really interesting content.
04 </div>
05
06 <a href="#" class="show_hide" rel="#slidingDiv_2">View</a><br />
07 <div id="slidingDiv_2" style="display:none;">
08 Fill this space with really interesting content.
09 </div>
Anything ideas?
Thanks

not knowing what exact issue you are having I can only assume that it's a display issue. my first recommendation is to dump IE6. maybe you didn't get the memo from IE6 about the huge plans to dump IE6 earlier this year??
my guess is it's a css issue so after your code is called I would iterate through your css and class information. you will most likely find that you have to manually set a visibility property for your css, not having ie6 this is the best info that I can give you.
best of luck.

Thanks for your reply.
Even i think, it's a css issue - here is the css code
<style>
body{
font-family:Verdana, Geneva, sans-serif;
font-size:14px;}
#slidingDiv, #slidingDiv_2{
height:300px;
background-color: #99CCFF;
padding:20px;
margin-top:10px;
border-bottom:5px solid #3399FF;
display:none;
}
</style>
If i change the display to block - it displays the content all the time and doesn't display when button is clicked or hide it when the button is clicked.
I think it's a css issue than anything else.

there was a CSS property in ie6 visibility I think that only existed in ie6. you might want to look into that.

How do I center a <div> vertically?
I have managed to horizontally align a Div object. Here is how I did it. I got the width and the height of the object I wanted to center (XAML CODE)
<Grid Background="White" Height="300" Width="738" VerticalAlignment="Center" HorizontalAlignment="Center">
Then, in the html file that hosts the silverlight control I did this:
<div id="silverlightControlHost" style="width:738px; height: 300px; margin-top:auto; margin-bottom:auto; margin-left: auto; text-align:center; margin-right: auto;">
That puts the control centered horizontally at the top of the web page.
Now, how do I center it vertically?

have you tried the following CSS??
display: table;
vertical-align: middle;
are you displaying this as a div within a div ?

I want to add some mathematical formulas to my web page. I want the formulas to look good however, it is important that the web page can be viewed with a standard browser. Should this be done in HTML? Should I make up a GIF file for them? What is the recommend tool these days?
Thanks

if you use basic HTML you will run into web safe font issues and wont look as good as an image
|
|
|
|
|
DO you mean you just want them to be seen or you want functionality?
If it is just an image, just bung it in a div and move to where it is needed.
