I use Rackspace Cloud Sites for myself and my customers and I have to agree. They offer the best hosting solution I've had to date.
Cheers,
Drew.

but Rackspace cloud charges per hour and that means you can't budget a fix amount per month

Take a look at [], I used them before and I think you get a 500Mb SQL Database and the plans start at 12USD per site

Although this[^] plan does not meet your .Net 4.0 + MS SQL, I have used them for several clients and at just $6 / month (2 year pre-pay) it's a bargin for what is provided.

Netnation? Those bastards were scum of the earth about 5 years ago. They kept getting bought out and the service quality would plummet each time to the point people were fleeing like rats from a drowning ship. Either a lot has changed or you have *very* low standards.

I was thinking about trying these guys:
Arvixe[^]
Unlimited disk space, unlimited bandwidth, and all the important ASP.Net stuff - $5/month

Is the web site in your link on arvixe?
If so, that's great, because I can get to it from work (I can't get to my cuirrent web site from work - it's blocked and I don't know why).

No way is that as good as it looks, I just did a search for this kind of stuff about a month ago and nobody is offering unlimited disk space or bandwidth. There's something fishy going on there.

When you take a look at their SQL Server there are literally 100s of databases on the same server, if you are after high perfomance then the cheap plan is not going to work. They are excellent for a light weight site and deve/testing.

When referring to hosting "Unlimited" means "...within the constraints of what's available between all the other customers on the shared server, and that we reserve the right to suspend the account of anyone going too far over the average utilization level."

That's false advertising. I checked, there is no asterisk beside it, when you click on the full description there is no legalese or restrictions mentioned of any kind.

The shared server gotcha is made explicit via the comparison page[^] between business and personal hosting. For ~$20-30/month more they promise a much smaller degree of sharing within a single server. Pulling the plug on a site that is too resource intensive is covered under the because we said so clause of the TOS[^]
Arvixe TOS excerpt (emphasis mine)
Suspension of Service or Cancellation: Arvixe reserves the right to suspend network access to any customer if in the judgment of the Arvixe network administrators the customer's server is the source or target of the violation of any of the other terms of the AUP or for any other reason which Arvixe chooses. If inappropriate activity is detected, all accounts of the Customer in question will be deactivated until an investigation is complete. We offer a 30 day money back providing we failed to provide you with the service as outlined for each individual hosting plan. Prior notification to the Customer is not assured. In extreme cases, law enforcement will be contacted regarding the activity. The customer will not be credited for the time the customer's machines were suspended.
Right to refuse service: Arvixe reserves the right to refuse service to any customer at any time within reasonable means/requests.

I guess it's common practice but it smacks of weasel behavior to say "unlimited" on the main page, click on the ? details link and it still says and unqualified "unlimited" then find it's really limited but in no certain terms.
So I guess in sum it's a great host for messing around as a developer and experimenting but not a host to which you would want to expose paying customers.

For most customers probably not; but if you do small projects as well as larger ones at least some of them would probably be fine with it. Small businesses without any desire to expand beyond the local region are unlikely to ever have much traffic, and there are non-technical people who only need someone to configure their out of the box CMS and put a bit of basic branding on it.

I 5'd all of your messages in this thread because it's GOOD to be the devil's advocate. Most people never read the fine print. I know I didn't.

I'm using them for and SL4/SQL Server app, support is not up to DASP standard but it is adequate, they helped a lot with my config problems and we got SSRS reports working.
