sure. By being pushed, or towed, or going downhill. Now can you access that computer that is powered off, or can't you?

Do you mean wake it up over the network?
Yes, there is a wake on LAN option that can be set on some PCs.

You can use a tool to wake the computer (start it) like http://oette.wordpress.com/2009/05/15/wol2-update/[^]. Once you've started the computer then you will be able to get all the info you would be able to get with it being ON.
Hope this helps...
===> modification beyond this point...
PS: you will need to get the mac address of the computer you want to WOL. With the software tool I've linked you will be able to do it automatically without even being in front of the computer: you'll be able to get the computer's name, IP, brand of the network card and MAC address.
Usually the network cards remain powered to allow the computer to WOL.
Some old computers don't allow to be awaken.
And in other cases you could need to tweak the BIOS.

Hi Guys....
I'm at the point of gong bald and sitting with chunks of my hair on the ground next to me with my current hosting company.
Following is a brief description of the hell I have been going through the last 2 weeks, so if you want to skip it all, just go to the last two sentences
I'm currently doing my hosting via Aplus.net, and the first client that I have where is something involved other than a quick dotnetnuke or wordpress site, a nice little challenge for once, then it turns out a bigger challenge than what I was anticipating.
Well... it started that I need a nice sql database, so quickly hop onto their control panel and..... oops, unable to create the domain via the control panel.. get an error. No problem, on chat and they create the domain for me... step one done... domain is registered.
Second thing, the database.
Back into the control panel to create the database... ooops, unable to create the database via the control panel... get an error. No problem once again on chat, they do something in the backend, ask me to try again, sure thing there I can create the database from the control panel. Nice thing about the package that I have, is that I get a free MSSQL database , just what I want.
Database is created but I'm unable to connect via management studio, back on chat... ok I need IP whitelisting to connect to the database, fine I give them my IP address... while they are busy with whitelisting I get a nice sms, there just went R170 (South African Rand) off my account . I'm on chat with them so I query this as I'm suppose to get a free database. Yes they tell me, the free database is a 50MB database, and I created a 100MB database, but 100MB was the smallest option that there was, you can choose either 100, 250, 500, 1GB or 2GB database.. Oh they tell me, they will log a support ticket to change the database and then I need to contact their billing department to get the refund. (Still waiting for that to be cleared up) and did I mention that is R170 per month.
Now all this happend 2 weeks ago.
Every since then I have been having issues connecting to the database where I get that lovely network or instance related error message, so for the last 2 weeks I have been on their chat on a daily basis, re-requesting the IP whitelisting for it appears to reset somehow that they can't explain.
So I think it is time for me to move hosting company, so any suggestions for reliable and affordable hosting companies that I can look at?
My requirements are dot net 4.0 with MS SQL database

DiscountAsp.Net[^]: been with them for years and, yes, they're a teency bit pricey but never, ever had a problem. Do a search and you may find 6 months half-price coupon. They really are very good.

Cool thanks, checking them out now, best thing is that even the site (hosted on their servers) is unable to connect to the database (hosted on their servers)

Am I correctly reading their price sheet that the only DB available at the base plan is access?!?!
3x12=36
2x12=24
1x12=12
0x12=18

DASP - The hosting is good, the support even better and the forum active. Its easy to quibble about a few dollars but when you add the wasted time with so so service and support its money well spent.

Good lord, $25 a month is super steep. My hosting plan covers unlimited databases of unlimited size (both SQL Server and MySql) for $5 a month (and that includes the cost of ASP.net hosting). Well, the databases are limited by the overall hosting maximum of 1GB.
If you are interested, give Planet Small Business a try. The only complaints I have are that the Plesk software they offer to manage the site is super slow (though they claim that's because my site is on a slow server, and they have offered to move it if I am willing to do the backup and restore), and their billing system is clumsy (I get a bunch of emails each time I am billed). Still, the price is right.

Cool, will look into them, I have the same problem with aplus.net, the control panel where you are supposed to manage your domains is dead slow and get like 3 emails for one thing that gets billed
Thanks

I do not have a host so I am in no real position to offer advice, but modhost.com serves my church well.

I use Rackspace Cloud Sites for myself and my customers and I have to agree. They offer the best hosting solution I've had to date.

but Rackspace cloud charges per hour and that means you can't budget a fix amount per month

Take a look at [], I used them before and I think you get a 500Mb SQL Database and the plans start at 12USD per site

Although this[^] plan does not meet your .Net 4.0 + MS SQL, I have used them for several clients and at just $6 / month (2 year pre-pay) it's a bargin for what is provided.

Netnation? Those bastards were scum of the earth about 5 years ago. They kept getting bought out and the service quality would plummet each time to the point people were fleeing like rats from a drowning ship. Either a lot has changed or you have *very* low standards.

I was thinking about trying these guys:
