If you are trying to host a site, that you just developed, then it's better to start with Shared Hosting, once you get the users and revenue going, you can shift to Dedicated Hosting, and once the site becomes big hit (you need to decide the criteria), then you try to host the site yourself. otherwise it's not worth it and too much efforts/money will be required to test if your new idea is going to work or not. becuase selft hosting is big resposibility, you need everything redundant, power / hardware / internet / storage etc...

And if you have that kind of money in your pocket, then buy 2 high configuration servers, with dual socket CPUs, quad core Xeons, with 32 GB RAM each, with RAID 10 harddrives. and then install vmware ESX in both. and configure atleast 1 web servers each (for redundacy) , and 1 database server with atleast 1 node for replication (both on sperate servers for redundacy).

you can allocate 8GB x 2 ram to sql server database, 4GB ram x 2 to web servers. reserve 2 GB for vmware host. and 1 GB for sql server failover witness database. and use rest for development environment. (and the networking hardware extra, hardware firewalls, switches, static ip, internet connections etc..)

And if this is too complex then go with Amazon EC Services or Windows / SQL Azure. and you dont have to worry about anything, and you can upgrade the hardware as per the demand, by changing the web.config.

Number of users doesnt matter, even you have 7 mil users, it will handle. the question is how many are online at the given point of time? if around 3000 users are online at the same time, it will handle it. (again it depends how complex the site is, and how much database access / calculations are required to satisfy one user request) you can always use Load/Stress Testing tools on the website before launching it. I always stree test my web applications with atleast 5000 users for most common workflow.

Have you actually thought of calling a hosting company and seeing what they would recommend you use from your spec?

In the cloud -it's not always clear - So I framed my question in a simple manner.there are a lot of techies around here, so it might have been good to get a rough estimate.

That depends on the number of cores on each proc, the amount of RAM and the technology stack the site is built on. It also depends on whether you're virtualising and / or tuning the OS correctly. The disk setup - SAN vs DAS vs local drives plays a huge importance as well as, to an extent, the size of your existing database tables and the caching mechanisms you have in place. You've also asked about "server", not "servers".

The minimum spec for a single server to run each facet of (yes, I'm cheating) CodeProject with current visitor load would be:

1 6-core 16GB web server with, say, 3 virtual web servers.
1 dual proc 12 core SQL server with 64Gb RAM. Bring this down to a single 6-core, 8GB if you start with empty tables.
1 lazy machine with 16GB for running caching using AppFabric. The better you make this, the cheaper you can go on your database server
1 linux based mail forwarder
DNS, AD, Firewall

Double everything up for redundancy.

You could go lower, fairly easily, but I love having headroom.

Yes, there is a wake on LAN option that can be set on some PCs.

You can use a tool to wake the computer (start it) like http://oette.wordpress.com/2009/05/15/wol2-update/[^]. Once you've started the computer then you will be able to get all the info you would be able to get with it being ON.

PS: you will need to get the mac address of the computer you want to WOL. With the software tool I've linked you will be able to do it automatically without even being in front of the computer: you'll be able to get the computer's name, IP, brand of the network card and MAC address.

Usually the network cards remain powered to allow the computer to WOL.

Some old computers don't allow to be awaken.

And in other cases you could need to tweak the BIOS.

Hi Guys....

I'm at the point of gong bald and sitting with chunks of my hair on the ground next to me with my current hosting company.

Following is a brief description of the hell I have been going through the last 2 weeks, so if you want to skip it all, just go to the last two sentences Wink | ;)

I'm currently doing my hosting via Aplus.net, and the first client that I have where is something involved other than a quick dotnetnuke or wordpress site, a nice little challenge for once, then it turns out a bigger challenge than what I was anticipating.

Well... it started that I need a nice sql database, so quickly hop onto their control panel and..... oops, unable to create the domain via the control panel.. get an error. No problem, on chat and they create the domain for me... step one done... domain is registered.

Second thing, the database.
Back into the control panel to create the database... ooops, unable to create the database via the control panel... get an error. No problem once again on chat, they do something in the backend, ask me to try again, sure thing there I can create the database from the control panel. Nice thing about the package that I have, is that I get a free MSSQL database $Shucks | :-\$ , just what I want.

Database is created but I'm unable to connect via management studio, back on chat... ok I need IP whitelisting to connect to the database, fine I give them my IP address... while they are busy with whitelisting I get a nice sms, there just went R170 (South African Rand) off my account Mad | :mad:

. I'm on chat with them so I query this as I'm suppose to get a free database. Yes they tell me, the free database is a 50MB database, and I created a 100MB database, but 100MB was the smallest option that there was, you can choose either 100, 250, 500, 1GB or 2GB database.. Oh they tell me, they will log a support ticket to change the database and then I need to contact their billing department to get the refund. (Still waiting for that to be cleared up) and did I mention that is R170 per month. OMG | :OMG:

Now all this happend 2 weeks ago.
Every since then I have been having issues connecting to the database where I get that lovely network or instance related error message, so for the last 2 weeks I have been on their chat on a daily basis, re-requesting the IP whitelisting for it appears to reset somehow that they can't explain.

So I think it is time for me to move hosting company, so any suggestions for reliable and affordable hosting companies that I can look at?
My requirements are dot net 4.0 with MS SQL database
