I have a standards/best practices question for ASP.NET webforms.
I'm making a new website that may draw tables onto the page showing reports (depending on user inputs). The style for these tables is in my CSS file.
I want to have the header row of a table that I create in the code-behind have a special style, and I can do that by putting style information in the code-behind (with the TableRow.Style.Add() method), but I'd rather pull the information from the CSS file so I only have one place to maintain style elements at.
Is there a standard way of doing this?

Can't you assign CSS classes in the code-behind as well? Instead of tr.Style.Add("font-family", "Verdana") or whatever, you say tr.CssClass = "mySpecialRowStyle"...

Thanks a lot; I knew there had to be something simple like that.

Yeah - The use of CssClass as a habit ends up avoiding a ton of headaches - especially as you get into enterprise sized projects with multi-level theming/css..
|
|
|

"as a habit" is an understatement - if you dont stick to only cssclass and try to integrate with ANY other (non .net) code or systems, this will be a nightmare. So, jkeelerz - I couldnt agree more: as a RULE for me though

I have a website under development, and I want to create two versions: one with rich content and a pretty layout for standard web browsers, and a trimmed down, cleaner version well suited for mobile browsers. My searches have led to many different approaches and I'm not sure which would be the best approach. Should I go with the same pages and different style sheets using the media tag? Separate subdomains for www and mobile ? If I go subdomain, should I have completely separate sites or is there a best practice for using the same content (child pages or some kind of include file) across the subdomains?
I would like to hear from other coders who have dealt with the issue.
Clarification: My project is a plain, vanilla website with text, pictures, menus and the occasional data form. No web apps, no videos (at least not yet), no Flash, no Silverlight.

We have, in the past, styled the content with the media tag, but ultimately this didn't prove to be enough. While you could get the styling reasonably well, we came to realise that not all the content was suited to the different resolutions; so we put in place a system where the same request could serve up content from two locations - 1 for mobile and 1 for full. Combined with the different stylesheets and it became a lot easier to roll out content.

I don't suppose you have any links that detail the technique? And is it something that could be implemented from a hosted service? I won't have access to the machines, and cannot control what software will be available.

I don't. It's just something that we built into our CMS - which we host.

Hi,
I was using visual studio 2005 before. Now I am using visual studio 2008. I got some problem with the loop execution. Well the project with the loop statements was working fine before but now in visual studio 2008, loop is not executing.
I have a loop on a button click and only the loop is not even working. The piece of code i have on my button click is
protected void btnArchieve_Click(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
for (int i = 0; i < gViewIndividualNames.Rows.Count; i++)
{
}
}
I put the breakpoints in all the lines but I even checked my count value. Its 2 but still this loop is executing only once.
Any ideas?

Without seeing what's in the for loop itself, no. If, however, there's a line in there that's incrementing i (e.g. i++ ), then that would explain it. Merely changing from VS2005 to VS2008 does not, by itself, change the fundamental nature of program applications.
If I were you, I'd put a local watch on i and see what's happening to it as you step through the loop.

thanks for the reply... now again the same code is working...

Dependant on the number of rows, there is nothing obviously wrong here.

I have following setting in my solution:
Project1 and Project2
Project1 has reference to project2. However when I trying to redirect from project1 to default.aspx in project2 it won't find it: The resource cannot be found.
here is what I see in url at run time:
first default page in Project1
http://localhost:192/default.aspx
redirect to default page from Project1
http://localhost:192/Project1/default.aspx
Could you explain why I am getting that error?
|
|
|
|
|
Because other web project should be in running mode too when you are redirecting from project one. It seems you are using VS inbuilt IIS.
Other way, you can host both apps on IIS server and then you can use it means redirect pages from both web aps.

I convert textbox to multiline for editing address data inside gridview. I am unable to find the syntax to retrieve multiline textbox value code behind for updating data.
I am using following syntax for retrieving textbox value code behind:
string DESCRIPTION = ((TextBox)gridview_ExcelData.Rows[e.RowIndex].Cells[11].Controls[0]).Text;

FindControl has worked. Has changed my syntax as below:
GridViw:
<asp:templatefield headertext="--------------DESCRIPTION--------------">
<edititemtemplate>
<asp:textbox id="txtDescription" runat="server" columns="30" rows="10"
="" text="<%# Bind("DESCRIPTION") %>" textmode="MultiLine">
<itemtemplate>
<asp:label id="lblDescription" runat="server" text="<%# Bind("DESCRIPTION") %>">
protected void gridview_ExcelData_RowUpdating(object sender, GridViewUpdateEventArgs e)
{
string DESCRIPTION = ((TextBox)gridview_ExcelData.Rows[e.RowIndex].FindControl("txtDescription")).Text;
}
It worked now.

Hello,
i made a simple menu using tables and labels on a top of a master page
i could use a help please by telling me how to use an UPDATE PANEL to update only part of the page (contentplaceholder).
this is the situation now:
in the Master page, i have the menu(Linkbuttons.. lots of them) and a contentplaceholder. i need the contentplaceholder to be updated partially without the menu of the masterpage each time i click on any of the labels. WHY? because each time someone clicks on the menu, the item gets marked up in red, i want the path of the item to be saved and therefore not to be refreshed.
I tried to read about update panels but none of it helped me. i might be missing something, i would be more than please if someone would explain the steps of using the update panel in THIS situation please.
thank you a lot.

Sir; What you are trying top do can not be estblished by Master page/Content page or an update panel. All you need is a frameset consists of to frams _master (to hold the menu) and _content (repesents the page you want to navigate to).
Now, every item in the menu should contain a link to the desired page. just like the code below:
<a href="url to the page" target="_content" >Some Text</a>
Help people,so poeple can help you.

Thank you Ali for your answer. can you show me a good sample using frameset in asp.net?

Good Day All
I have a Dynaically created a Textbox and i have a Dynamically created DIV. So what i want to do is to Find the Position of the Textbox and and Dynamically when this textbox is created , please a Div just next to this textbox. So my plan was to find the position of the textbox and next to it using the position of the textbox and calculate the position of a Div.
Thanks
