hi
can some one guide me how to build a tag cloud specially its data fetching. i am using asp.net 1.1 with c# and sql server 2k.
details
i have problem in counting the tags.
i am storing the tags in a single column as varchar entry seprated by space, dont catch up with the idea how to get the distinct tags from single column and then got their weight as well
thanks in advance

i had seen it before. but that is a very simple case just count the products against a category, while i am storing tags in a single column seprated by space first need to get the indivisual tag and then its weight but got problem in making query.
need guidance regarding how to fetch tags and their weight from single column of a table

Well, if you normalise your data model you won't have that problem. You should only ever store a single piece of data in a column value. You should not be storing multiple tags in a single row.
You need to create a new table and split the tags out into the new table. Then set up a many-to-many join between your original table and your tags table. A many-to-many join requires the setting up of an intermediate table.

While it is possible, it is increadibly inefficient and goes against decades of guidance on how to define relational databases.

Is it possible to enter data into a grid directly when a project is run.

Yes. But GridView does not support it directly. You have to manually make it editable. Use TemplateColumns and add controls and try.

|
<asp:GridView ID="GridView1" runat="server" AutoGenerateColumns="false">
<Columns>
<asp:ButtonField DataTextField="DeptName" CommandName="Select" HeaderText="DepartmentName" ></asp:ButtonField>
<asp:TemplateField>
<ItemTemplate>
<asp:TextBox ID="txt1" runat="server"> </asp:TextBox>
</ItemTemplate>
</asp:TemplateField>
</Columns>
</asp:GridView>
protected void Button1_Click(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
int DeptID;
string ID;
foreach (GridViewRow gr in GridView1.Rows)
{
ID = Gdv_Dept_List.SelectedDataKey.Value.ToString();
DeptID = int.Parse(ID);
TextBox tx = (TextBox)gr.FindControl("txt1");
insDept.up(DeptID,tx.Text);
BindGrid();
}
}
I gave the above design code and also in button click event above code is given.but when we tried to save it the selected field is updated to empty.what is the reason.

Are you trying to populate/defining value to the GridView on Page Load event?

I am not sure about checking the LAN connection.

Try the below code. You get the computer's list in a DataTable.
public DataTable GetComputers
{
DataTable dtComputers = new DataTable("Computers");
DataColumn dc;
DataRow dr;
dc = new DataColumn("ComputerName");
dc.DataType = System.Type.GetType("System.String");
dc.MaxLength = 50;
dtComputers.Columns.Add(dc);
dc = new DataColumn("IPAddress");
dc.DataType = System.Type.GetType("System.String");
dc.MaxLength = 50;
dtComputers.Columns.Add(dc);
Process p = new Process();
p.StartInfo.FileName = @"net.exe";
p.StartInfo.Arguments = "VIEW";
p.StartInfo.CreateNoWindow = true;
p.StartInfo.RedirectStandardOutput = true;
p.StartInfo.UseShellExecute = false;
p.Start();
p.WaitForExit();
while (!p.StandardOutput.EndOfStream)
{
string readLine = p.StandardOutput.ReadLine();
string computerName = "";
if (readLine.IndexOf("\\") == 0)
{
dr = dtComputers.NewRow();
computerName = readLine.Substring(2, readLine.IndexOf(" ")).Trim();
Console.Write("\n" + computerName);
dr["ComputerName"] = computerName;
dr["IPAddress"] = Dns.GetHostEntry(computerName).AddressList[0];
dtComputers.Rows.Add(dr);
}
}
if (!p.HasExited) p.Kill();
return dtComputers;
}

Am not getting EndOfStream after StandardOutput what namespace should be used for this.

Hello all. I'm an intermediate programmer, but relatively new to the web end of things and was wondering about the best way to go about scheduling an occasional task to run on the server... say every day or a certain number of hours/minutes.

"No, the cars are still on the ground and it's even dirtier, but we're working on it."

Windows service is good one for this.

Can you be more specific? How does one go about writing/installing a Windows service on a web server? I am hosted with 1&1, and do not have direct access to IIS.

Hi,
I have developed an ASP.Net Website,
and now I have published it,
in first page there is no code to run, only a login page but when I want to open my website in web a Runtime Error, but yet no code is runned.
it's the first time I upload an asp.net web site.
should I do any changes in my web.config for upload?
my web.config:
<?xml version="1.0"?>
<configuration>
<appSettings/>
<connectionStrings>
<add name=".." connectionString="Data Source=.;Initial Catalog=..;User ID=..;PWD=.." providerName="System.Data.SqlClient"/>
</connectionStrings>
<system.web>

Hi, i have a rookie question. how do i link asp.net and silverlight so that i can set properties or values on asp.net page and be able to access those values with a silverlight client?
i started a asp.net web application project. then i added a silverlight project. in asp.net, i selected "add silverlight link". at this point, i think i should be able to somehow move any data back and forth between asp and silverlight, and this is where i'm stuck. any suggestions what i can try ?
thanks !!

If you're talking about having a Silverlight object and other server controls on the same ASP.NET page, and have them share data back and forth, I think this proof of concept[^] will point you in the right direction.
If you're talking about having a silverlight component that should communicate with an ASP.NET web service, take a look at this QuickStart tutorial[^].

You can use "Add Silverlight Link" in VS 2008 if you have Silverlight Tool for VS 2008 installed.
smashguitars wrote: how do i link asp.net and silverlight so that i can set properties or values on asp.net page and be able to access those values with a silverlight client?
No. You won't be able to get the properties of ASP.NET page from Silverlight project. The main reason why we should use "Add Silverlight link" is that ~
1. To prevent the cross-domain error. For example, you won't be able to access the database from Silverlight directly. So, you have to create the webservice for that. then you have to invoke that service to get the data from database. If you are using two different projects for web service and silverlight project, you will get the cross-thread.. So, what we used to do is that we put the webservice in ASP.NET project and add the silverlight link to ASP.NET project.
Let me know if you need more help on Silverlight 1.1 with ASP.NET. I'm willing to help you..
