They Both Perfome the same it depends how you write your code. The Best programming Practices in vb.net does not mean they will still work for C#
Vuyiswa Maseko,
Spoted in Daniweb-- Sorry to rant. I hate websites. They are just wierd. They don't behave like normal code.

Hello,
Very small bit of background I was a Bsc in Software Engineering and 2.5 years working as a web developer, developing inhouse applications for a Hedge Fund Company, using ASP.NET, VB.NET, SQL Server etc. For the last year and a bit I have taken a career break but I am now looking into getting back into programming.
I feel pretty lost after a year and a half with literally no programming so I was thinking of getting a ASP.NET book and working through it before I get back into looking for a job. I was looking at Wrox Professional ASP.NET 3.5 in C# and VB.NET, has anyone worked their way through this book? Is this to indepth a book to get me back into programming? any other recommendations?
Also I wanted to ask if there is any new technologies I should be studying that are coming out that I am not aware of? I was thinking I need to get to grips with C# (seems to be the backend code of choice), AJAX controls, LINQ and VS 2008 and .Net3.5, I am I missing anything here.
Thanks for your help

ya you can go for wrox publications or black book they both are very good books and in new technologies you can go for sharepoint, wpf also.

If I had the time, I might consider becoming a contributor to an Open Source project. You would get real-world development experience and help the Open Source movement. (Also a nice thing to put on your resume ...)
Check out some projects at CodePlex:
http://www.codeplex.com/[^]
Find a project that you think is interesting, download it, get it to work on your machine and find out how you can make it better.
Good luck.

Thanks David this is a great idea, I'll look into this and try and find and interesting project and I feel that starting to build on top of some well written code will help me a serious amount more than starting a project from scratch myself.
Thanks

I was also wondering is ASP.NET current and something I should be buying a book and reading about as I see ASP.NET 4.0 Unleashed has now been released should I be buying 4.0?

can u please explain me What is the difference between
Managed and Unmanaged Code in .NET with example...?
|
|
|
|
|
"Managed Code" is what Visual Basic .NET and C# compilers create.CLR able to understand it. It compiles to Intermediate Language (IL), not to machine code that could run directly on your computer.
Where as "Unmanaged code" is what you use to make before Visual Studio .NET 2002 was released. Visual Basic 6, Visual C++ 6, even that 15-year old C compiler you may still have kicking around on your hard drive all produced unmanaged code. It compiled directly to machine code that ran on the machine where you compiled it.

Hi,
Managed code : the code which run under the control of CLR is managed code.
UnManaged Code : Which dosenot run under the control of CLR.
Hope this help.
Thanks
Rahul

Hi All
I have a website on which I am using following setting in web.config
1. to use forms authentication
<authentication mode="Forms">
<forms name="MyApplication" loginUrl="/_layouts/CommerceServer/CommerceloginPage.aspx" />
</authentication>
2.To secure a folder named MyAcc from anonymous access
<location path="Pages/MyAcc" allowOverride="false">
<system.web>
<authorization>
<deny users="?" />
</authorization>
</system.web>
</location>
3.The membership provider
<membership defaultProvider="UpmProvider">
<providers>
<add applicationName="MyApplication"
enablePasswordRetrieval="false"
enableEmailAddress="true"
name="UpmProvider"
type="Microsoft.CommerceServer.Runtime.Profiles.UpmMembershipProvider,Microsoft.CommerceServer.Runtime,
Version=6.0.1.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35" enablePasswordReset="true" requiresQuestionAndAnswer="false"
passwordFormat="Hashed"
PasswordStrengthRegularExpression="^(?=.*\d)(?=.*[a-z])(?=.*[A-Z]).{6,50}$" />
</providers>
</membership>
Now the challenge is on my development server the deny tag works fine i.e when an anonymous
user try to access pages
which are there in MyAcc folder,the user gets redirected
to login page.
On the other hand on production site,the anonymous user is able to access the pages of MyAcc folder.
Please suggest what could be wrong.Is there any other way to secure thge pages from anonymnous access.
Thanks

Use the following JS function
function checkBackSpace()
{
if(event.keyCode==8)
{
alert('You pressed BackSpace');
return false;
}
}
and put it on body tag as
<body onkeydown="return checkBackSpace();">
Now you will get a message.
Cheers!!

I think Brij is right. But a little changes are required in this code. Otherwise it will alert when user hits backspace key in a textbox. So here is the answer below
In JS code
---------------------
function checkBackSpace(event)
{
event = event || window.event;
var target = event.target || event.srcElement;
if(event.keyCode==8 && (!(target.type =="text" || target.type =="textarea"))
{
alert('You pressed BackSpace');
return false;
}
return true;
}
and put it on body tag as
-------------------------------
<body onkeydown="return checkBackSpace(event);>
Cheers

For those that want to know.
The problem was not my application as I knew all along, the problem turned out to be how the initial page was called in the various browsers.
If I omitted the www. of default.com/mypage.aspx the Session ID was created for mysite.com/default.aspx but when I called the response page via the call back, the window.location.url redirected to www.mysite.com/responsepage.aspx a new session was started with new session objects resulting in the strange behavior.
To those who answered, thanks your input did help in pointing me in the right direction.

Hi,
I'm trying to embed an ActiveX control in a website developed using the Sharp (S#arp) Architecture Framework[^], which leverages the ASP.NET MVC Framework & NHibernate. However, I'm struggling to get it to work.
Is it possible to embed an ActiveX control?
I'm also thinking of an alternative, where I could add a Web form to the project & that could contain the ActiveX. (I suppose it should work). Any alternative ideas if its not possible to embed an ActiveX control in a ASP.NET MVC view?
Thanks,
ND

Hi, you should check IIS: the upper limit of thread, then check whether you have closed every transaction in your code or not.
Good luck.
