Not true. Not true at all. I can practice playing basketball 24/7 for the next 100yrs and never come close to being able to play like Michael Jordan or Shaq. Yes, theres a lot more people who can do UI design vs. being a basketball star, but the concept is the same. Some people are just better at certain things then others... thats just life. How can I possibly explain to you "what looks good". If you showed me a UI, I could tell you what was good or bad about it, but I couldn't really teach you to decide that for yourself. I mean, over time, you might pick up on a pattern, but thats not really deciding if it looks good for yourself, now is it?  .

Do you make a distinction between the "best" and just good, solid design?
People can be taught basic, good design - font usage, static or dynamic balance, flow, etc., etc.
Every one can bring their own "personl genius" to anything, if they are prepared to do the work.
That's what I call style.
Do you think that every great scientific discovery was made by a genius?
I don't think they were not all "Einsteins". There are lots of good, solid athletes who play professionally for their whole career without being "stars".
I believe that if you practice with passion and intelligence you can achieve what ever you desire. You just have to be prepared to make the sacrifice, have the desire, the dedication, etc. In short it is entirely up to YOU. Try it and then contact me again in 10 or 15 years.
Check out the biographies of people and you will see that they all had a mentor somewhere in their life or career i.e taught directly or indirectly by example.
This is just my observation, and I hope you take no offence, but I think you are, perhaps, a bit fatalistic. I believe that praising others can be a good excuse for not changing or doing something about things ourselves
I think the real situation is that a lot of coders are just not interested in design and styling and a lot of graphic designers are not interested in coding. Amongst my friends this has been the case.

Just a little point. The technique can be learned but the creativity comes from experience.

One of the most common issues with UI design that seems to be missed is the consistant placement of the widgets from screen to screen. If the widgit is called "Add" then place it in the same location from screen to screen and make the functionality be the same. This will help the users learn your application quicker and they will have less frustration.

It's hard to tell the kind of problem you're facing. have you tried this on another PC running the same features as your PC? There are certain test you need to do in order to know is the problem is a generalized one or it's only specific to your PC.

for the first time silverlight ask for download if you have some firewall or if you rejected that file then also it may show you blank page...
if possible post your code which is used to call ...

Hello,
My goal is to add dynamically some control to the main window.
When the user preeses mouse right button on the window the position where the button pressed is the top left of the control, then the user keeps the button pressed and drags the mouse on the window and the position where he releses the button is the right bottom of the control.
What i want is while the user drags the mouse while he is pressed is that some square appear on the screen to show user the size of the control that will be created.
This is exactly like when you try to create new fence on youre desktop with the "Fences" application.

Although I don't really get your question fully and I don't know what Application platform (WPF or Silverlight or Winform)you're using but I will suggest this. You need to work with three parameters: The height of your square, the width and the mouse pointer position. You will need to do some math to calculate a new width and height for your square based on the position of the mouse pointer.
I will suggest that you make your question more clearer so that people can really understand you and help you out.

Hi,
What is the difference between windows 7 86x and 64x ?
I would like to purchase a laptop with windows 7 for silverlight, wpf and windows phone 7, sql server 2008 developments.
I know I can install the sql server 2008 express and visual studio 2010 express on windows 7 but not sure whether to have 86x or 64x.
Any thoughts please?
