Intel® IoT Roadshow Taipei, Taiwan

This article is for our sponsors at CodeProject. These articles are intended to provide you with information on products and services that we consider useful and of value to developers

Get access to the new Intel® IoT Developer Kit, a complete hardware and software solution that allows developers to create exciting new solutions with the Intel® Galileo and Intel® Edison boards. Visit the Intel® Developer Zone for IoT.

We had an Intel IoT roadshow at Taipei on 16th and 17th of May 2015 at CLBC flagship.

128 attendees developed 32 working prototypes in 48 hours. We provided our IoT developer kit to each attendee which had an Intel Edison board, Arduino expansion board and many basic sensors. People also got their own sensors to work with Edison.

We gave a session to the participants on how to get started with Edison and an overview of all the supported software tools and SDK to get their work going.

Participants started hacking at around 12pm. Everyone were too busy finalizing their plan of action for the rest of the event. At the same time, mentors were busy helping teams to resolve their technical challenges. Overall it is a great sight.

By next day 11am, many projects were ready to be demoed. By 3pm, everyone completed their projects and submitted for judging.

Judging Panel: We had an illustrious panel of judges from academia and the local maker communities.

  • Academicians:
    • (Chi-Sheng Shih) - Professor
    • Shiao-Li (Charles) Tsao - Professor
  • Local Maker Community Representative:
    • Jollen Chen - Maker & Mokoversity Founder
    • Jserv - Maker & South Star Xelerator Founder
  • Industry experts:
    • YT Lee - The Vice President of QNAP System, Inc. (A company focused on IoT Solutions)
  • Intel judge and moderator:
    • Richard Chuang - IoT Solutions Architect

After sufficient reviews, judges decided to announce winners. Here is the list of winners of Intel IoT Roadshow at Taipei.

Winners:

1st Place
MABO : Helping parents monitor their children when they are at school or away from home. The solution includes a wearable badge for the child and a home monitoring modeling light. Sensor in the badge update the parents on the status of the child and alerts parents in case of an emergency or if the child loses the badge.

2nd Place:
DiaperPie: DiaperPie is a smart IoT device which is patched onto a diaper, in order to track the baby's status like temperature, sleeping position etc. and also notifies parent on actions required like changing the diaper. The solution uses Bluetooth/BLE on the Intel Edison board to transfer sensor data to a smart phone and the cloud, ensuring low power consumption and low radiation for the baby’s safety. The team also created a website to showcase this solution https://sway.com/vuDzs_vgtI30mb7O.

ePetCare – IoT with pets and cloud integration: This is a pet "belt collar" that addresses 3 different scenarios:

Kitchen Warning: An ultra-sound transmitter that mimics the voice of the pet owner and plays a pre-recorded warning when the pet collar approaches the kitchen door and helps keep the pets from entering the kitchen
Toy Room: Interactive pet toys that can record and exchange interactive data on the pet
Food dispenser: Monitoring the pet’s food consumption and home environment

3rd Place:
Better Me: Better Me is a wearable smart necklace that helps alter behaviors and mood patterns. The solution tracks that speech of the user and analyses the user emotion in real time based on the words spoken by the user. It then provides feedback to the user and suggests corrective action to guide them to towards a desired emotion or state of mind. For example when the user is angry, it prompts them calm down. Better Me also records and analyses the emotional history of the user and recommends tips / trainings to improve oneself.

Pet’s Health Keeper (PHK): A solution to take care of your pet when you are not around. PHK feeds your pet according to the timer and monitors the food consumed by the pet. Leveraging the power of IP Camera, IR distance sensor and speaker - the solution helps you to interact with your pet from a remote location. Moisture and temperature sensors are used to monitor the freshness of the food and the environment.

Urban Baker: Urban Baker is an app that displays places on the map of a city or a building. Once user enters the place, information about the place pops up. The solution uses ultrasonic as a beacon to detect the visitor’s location.
