I can handle people in my family asking questions about computers because they're not always that stupid. What makes me mad is Marines calling me up asking how to use this new copy paste function!! (I chose the wrong ***** MOS)

You're one shallow man, Paul... but I agree with you.

You will probably end up making it even worse cos both your eyes each have different field of view.

If she's pretty, it's obvious that she's using it to get to your skills. Just say no.
As a rule of thumb, I don't fix pretty women's computers, because all they want is my bodyskill.
I'm half serious.

Sometimes I supply the hardware infrastructure my application need, and making a assistance contract with the company... and I say company... not home user.
Abou 10 years ago my main incomme, came from Hardware, and what bothered my the most was when I had to install Internet!... and it still is...
Feeling that the owner of the new PC never used Internet before allways cost me 3 or 4 hours of explaining... It's the list of Search Engines, Porn sites... everything but joy!
The phrase... "Yesterday I say this outdoor with a web page address... www."#$%"#"#$"#$."#$"
Damn...

Im specially knowned for a special quality i have: i can be a real pain in the ass boring people to death with tecnical details... But i only do that when i want to bore people... So, when people ask me to repair a computer, i do it and then when they asked me what it was, i start talking about the influence of solar dark spots on computers. Then i move along to explain the earth's magnetic dinamo workings, to explain it all. As i did a favour to those people, they really have to dig all the crap talk, but they dont call me again

I don't tell people what I use at work, and my home computer is a Mac. People know not to call me since "I don't do Windows !"

A tried and true method for sure! In the event this doesn't work and you are required to be a little more blatant, try this trick I picked up from a good friend of mine. The next time someone asks you to spend 4 hours fixing their computer and offers you $10.00 for your effort, open your wallet, thumb through any cash contained therein and boldly announce that you will be willing to pay them all of the cash you have on hand NOT to fix their computer as it will save the both of you time and frustration. I've had to resort to this maneuver on three occasions and it has worked quite well. Although I can't say for sure, I think it has something to do with making them think twice about how you value your time.

If you live in a country with a national minimum wage [all EU countries have a minimum wage - In the UK it is £4.50 per hour ($7.95 or €6.45 approx.).] You could exclaim something like "Wow! £1.40 per hour" [$2.50 == £1.40 approx.] which will at least make them realise they haven't even matched the national minimum wage that the McDonald's employee will be getting (and apparently they pay a doller extra if you smile too!)

Inevitably, two weeks later, after spilled coffee on the keyboard, three new viruses the kids accidentally download, and a lightning strike at the transformer down the street, who gets blamed for the new problems?
Naturally, the last person to "fix" the computer!

Well yeah, naturally. Do you think the people would admit that it was their own fault (or the fault of their kids) that their PC broke?

I once took my computer to BestBuy, the floppy drive was not working. They shipped it to the factory and fixed it at no cost to me. They also told me that they found a broken pencil inside the floppy drive, the pencil was given back to me in a plastic bag.
It rurns out that my younger son did that.

Hilarious!
Really, though, it's awesome that they still fixed it for you at no cost. Many other companies that I've dealt with would have said "Tough luck" and charged for the cost of a new drive, including installation.

Been there done that. All you have to say is "Well, the next time you want your computer fixed, either pay someone to do it, or do it yourself". That'll end the discussion rather quickly.

When my friends do work on my house (1-2 days work), I expect them to bill me (discount for friends of course) and they do. Now when I get a phone call asking to me to come over to fix their PC, which usually takes a couple of hours at a time, should I bill them?, especially when the problem a virus or some nasty adware problem usually picked up from viewing prOn sites.

At some point, if you don't ask for something in return, they will assume you'll fix anything for free. If you don't want to ask for money, use barter. Ask for pizza and beer, or your other food/beverage of choice.
