When someone sings along, you start to listen, to interpret, whether you want it or not. And this consumes power, it distracts. Worst is, if you start to sing along by yourself.
I put a headset on, start some long running instrumental tracks, not loud, but loud enough to stop surroinding noises of colleagues nearby.
I put my phone on DnD, and go.
Best sound for me are medieval/irish/celtic folk sounds. nothing that is too fast and nothing that is as sleep-pill-like classics (Bach, Schubert... no way).
There is a great composer, Adrian von Ziegler, who makes _wonderful_ irish/fantasy music, which helps me through the day very often.

I read many study which promote open office culture (low height separation between cubical) and no cabin culture. Definitely it will save some direct infrastructure cost but indirectly cost more due to unnecessary distractions / disturbances.
