Just learned I've lost 8 dB of hearing since 2007. Guess I should start staying inside while testing the worlds largest jet engine.

That's about the same time I lost a bit of my eyesight. Coincidence?????

... a loud mouth know-it-all-does-it-all that needs constant attention and praise from those around him. Never shuts up. Really irritating. Unfortunately he seems to get his work done well though. Tough luck for the rest of us.
Where are we going? And why am I in a hand basket?

Exactly, its embarrassing. I wonder why our brain doesn’t get any pre-notification of this happening.

My previous boss who left only a few weeks ago, spent years complaining to higher management how the noise an open plan office disrupts the flow. He lost many hours of work due to this - the main culprit being the managing directors mobils phone, being left on his desk at full volume ringing all the time.
We finally got a wall and door put in (after years of waiting....) the week before he resigned. It helped a lot with the noise.
Two weeks after he leaves, an office layout change has to be done to fit in more people - and were back to an open plan office for the software dept again
Although, the new software boss is not against the use of headphones and listening to music, its a habit I have got out of due to my previous bosses working practices(music disrupts the creative juices....)
Well, should be interesting to see how things go....
If you vote me down, my score will only get lower

Of course, as the probable result of years spend working in noisy computer rooms with the combined sound of air-conditioning, cooling fans, big disk drives, impact printers and the high-frequency whine from CRT monitors, I now almost always hear a continuous background noise and never experience complete silence.
|
|
|
|
|
I'm the same, although mine is not through anything work related.
I have no idea what silence is like anymore, and although I can mostly tune out the sounds in my head if there are other sounds around there are some sounds I just don't hear anymore because the tinnitus masks them.
At times though it can get really distracting. Last time I asked the doctors about (which admittedly was 17 years ago) there was nothing they could do at all.
Every man can tell how many goats or sheep he possesses, but not how many friends.

Mine's not definitely work related, but it seems the most likely cause.
Last time I asked, about 3 years ago, there was still nothing anyone could do and, AFAIK, no reasearch being done.
Of course, there's plenty of Snake Oil on the web to try...

In my home department (where I belong normally) we leave the office doors open so we can see who is going past and people can always stop for a chat. But being really loud is frowned upon - they can go into the coffee corner for that.
One guy raves and rants at his computer. I told him he should see a psychiatrist, he said his doctor had told him to vent his feelings or else he would die of a heart attack like his brother. I said he would die of a karate chop if he didn't keep quiet, since then he doesn't do it so often... His roommate used to calm him, but he retired and no-one wants to share with him.
Now in the new office (where I am lent out for a year) it is open plan, and they are all contractors, working away like hamsters in wheels, not a word is spoken, most have MP3 running. I found this a bit hard to start with, but I say hello and good morning and how's the weather, and they are thawing out a bit. By the time I leave they will be quite spoilt.

I work in a warehouse. Sometimes I work on the floor (majority) and other times I am in an office area, just on the other side of a wall which connects to the warehouse. :P

The sh*t I overhear is absolutely amazing. The office has a no headphone policy, but when I was hired I said I must be exempt because I could tell it was a noisy office from the interview.
