A year ago I started a charity foundation (we work with street children). Now all my savings are gone...
Wait... What was the question???

|
|
|
Hey what was the name of your foundation?

The survey asked "What is the best way to make money through programming?" but didn't say who should be doing the programming - so get somebody else to program for you
Like Pete O'Hanlon, who's got his own company. Or me, a Business Analyst - I don't rake in a lot of money, but at least I don't have to stare at a debugger at 22:30 on a Friday.

Getting a job can make you a nice living. Then, if you're still interested, you can do some other project and either sell them or whatever. It'll give you some bonuses while making you more competent at work. Your main revenue stream will probably be your regular job.

I have it on rather good authority:
The best way for a programmer to make money: Be born RICH.
So, better luck next time.

I know a few programmers who wrote a service and sold it on - they make a fairly good living that way. On the other hand, they did a lot of "sleeping in their car and eating out of dumpsters" while they built up enough customers to make it viable.
The most consistent way to make programming pay is to let your clients take that risk - either by selling hours on contract, or working for a software developer. You may not make a zillion dollars that way, but you are more likely to get paid.
I am sure there are a few people here who are paying their rent with their funky iPhone apps, but I'm guessing they are in the minority.

Best???
Work for a company
Small company - better pay and chance for advancement
Large company - pay dependent on experience and there profit margin, advancement slow (usually)
Work for yourself
Advancement - your already El Presendente what more do you want
Money - depends on skills;
- hardware/software
- sales and marketing
- project management
- etc.
Headaches - constant, cost of remedy;
- Adult beverages, depends on deadlines, customer attitude, your attitude, your significant others attitude, need I continue.
- Xanex, mood elevators, anti-depressants, etc. see previous entry
Get a job mating on a sailboat cruising the Caribbean;
- Pay not so good
- Advancement, not unless the captain jumps ship or you screw his wife and she divorces and partners with you.
- Headaches, very few.
So in summary depends on a lot of factors but I choose the last one but that's just me.

I like the idea of the last one but I'd be bored out of my tree within a few days.
Being able to walk away from a mentally challenging piece of work and dally around a pool with some appropriate company whenever I want, now that sounds like fun!
Never underestimate the power of human stupidity

Like I said that's just me.
I left home at a very early age and worked very hard all my life now at my age I would love the peace and the salt life.
Would I get bored...hmm perhaps at times but there's always things to occupy the mind. I've traveled quite a bit over the years including a couple of trips to the Caribbean and enjoyed going to areas that most tourists don't venture and investigating local cultures and customs.

I thought it was pretty clear - best way to make money, so wallet seems to be the one they are asking about!
