Ansering this question how to make our site secure : all banking sites do :using https:[^] I used the UK currency symbol as in £250. The preview was fine, but the answer as submitted had the sterling symbol prefixed by an "Â" character: "£250". I have edited the question to use text instead.
Low priority (it's not as if anyone uses money often in Q&A), but if you are looking at the Q&A processing code could you have have a quick look?

That's an interesting case of unicode rot. I don't think I've ever seen bogo characters inserted without killing the original victim in the process.

I just tried it again, by creating a new answer in the same format as the previous, and found:
1) The preview is fine while you create the message.
2) When you press "Submit your solution", the display shows the extra characters (I emailed a JPG screen shot)
3) They disappear if you then refresh the screen, so the answer goes in as "Solution 2" rather than as "Your solution"
I hadn't realized the last bit: when I first saw them, I immediately edited the answer to get rid of them.

Easiest way to get it: open a Q&A question. Wait for someone else to edit it. Press the "Improve question" widget. Bingo!

I searched for an old entry in the lounge using the words "that's how". I got 0 results. Bluffed by the results I tweaked by search few times then realized, when ever I use an apostrophe the search is returns 0. I can understand the risks of apostrophe in search, but the solution is not that difficult, or is it?
