I think it would be great with a "MFC C++" forum, and a "Non MFC C++" forum.
I think the traffic in the C++ forum is very high, this way it would be shared between 2 forums, and it would be a whole lot more easy to separate all the MFC questions from all the plain C++ stuff...
Anyway, just my 2 cents

I've had that thought too.
I'd cast my vote for a C++ forum - or how about C/C++, and leave the VC forum as is (?)

If you are working in C, I think that the better is that use ADO.
You can find a good help in http://www.codeproject.com/database/simpleado.asp.

Hi,
I remember that a while ago, Chris had asked us to send him the list of our favorite books on different topics and he started to make a web page with those books. Unfortunately I cannot find this list any more on this site.
Does it still exist?
If not, I think it is great if will exist, it can even contain a link to amazon or to anybody, to give the small profit.

What is the single most time consuming problem developers of websites face? Well for most I would say it is not creating the backend database, scripting ASP to perfection or getting your product search engine to work well. It is browser compatibility.
Advice on this subject ranges from "create two sites, one for IE, one for Netscape" through to "screw Netscape, their users can go and download IE". Both of those "solutions" are simply not feasible in a business world. Creating two sites is one hell of a mission (what happens when the client decides to change one small thing which is on every page? double the time required because you effectively have two sites) and ignoring Netscape users (while a wonderful idea!) is not good business sense.
So you ask "get to the point moron!" and I say: We need a compatibility forum where bugs are posted and fixes found. I personally can list over a hundred fixes for common Netscape/IE issues which we spent long hours figuring out.

I agree, but you seem to be forgetting that there are actually more than two browsers! What about users of Opera, Konqueror, Mozilla, Links, ...
Of course either "create two sites" and "make everybody use MSIE" aren't valid solutions (Linux, BSD or Unix users can't use MSIE anyway), but making sites compatible only with MSIE and Netscape isn't really any improvement. A properly designed WWW site should be accessible with _any_ browser.

Yes, you are totally correct. Of course in a perfect world all browsers would stick to standards and we would not have the problem in the first place.
To be truthful, and probably annoy more than a few coders on this forum, I have to disregard those other browsers mainly because their market share simply is not large enough to make business sense. The cost of making a site work on all those other browsers far over-shoots the revenue that can be brought in from them. Users of Konqueror, Links etc will simply have to make do with some alignment issues, font size problems and javascript bugs.
One thing I find interesting is how can Opera -a relatively small company is it not- trounce Netscape when it comes to standards? Microsoft may be big, bad and ugly but one cannot deny that their browser is in most respects better than the competition.
So do you feel that a forum on compatibility is a good idea?

I can live with some appearance issues when browsing with Konqueror, but sites that completely refuse entry because I'm not using either of the two major browsers really make me
Microsoft may be big, bad and ugly but one cannot deny that their browser is in most respects better than the competition
Standards compatibility isn't one of those respects where MSIE is better, see e.g. results of Ian Hickson's browser test suites I think we need more than two people interested in compatibility to start a new forum

Hi Chris,
I've posted some question to the message boards, but it is a visual appearance question, i'm unable to explain it in words...
It will be easy for me if i attach any kind of image that depicts my thoughts so the Gurus can help me (us) better. Is it possible to upload a image and attach to the message.....
ThanX,

I'm using IE 5.5 on Win2K Pro
From the Code Project home page, I click on something in the side bar. When that link appears there's another side bar that hides about 1-2 inches of the left side of the screen. That makes the left-most inch or so of text unreadable.
Is there a way to disable that bouncing side bar ?

I've disabled it. What browser were you using?

I'm a beginner with computers, and I have to make a Database.
1- I have Microsoft Access. Is that a good software to use?
2- I like to know if anyone knows any good book that would teach Microsoft Access to a beginner like me.
I appriciate all the help.

I tried answering the survey. However since I haven't attended any of the events mentioned (not even other events not listed), I can't submit my answer.
How about a 'None' option for the event list ?
Just my two cents.

Hi Chris,
It seems that people are having problems with posting code at forums. Especially, the trangle brackets are often missing.
Maybe the asp for programming forums you should use Server.HTMLEncode for output? The database table would get new BIT column and HTML form would have new checkbox "Use plain text" (checked by default). The asp output code checks the new column, and if it contains TRUE, uses Server.HTMLEncode. Otherwise, it just spits the untouched contents.
Beginners would leave the option in its default state - their posts would be HTMLEncoded. Advanced users would be still able to use HTML formatting after clearing the option.
Unfortunately, I have no idea how difficult is integrating the smileys with this.
Cheers

That's exactly what will be done. I need to lock down features while I rewrite things using C# - otherwise I'll have a VBScript and a C# version to keep in sync and their ain' that many hours in the day!

Chris,
A minor problem that I came across with my bookmark links (the CP bookmark feature and not the browser ones) is that when articles get moved my bookmark links become invalid!
For example I had a bookmark link to..
http://www.codeproject.com/useritems/cpropertyview.asp
and it now moved (infact today) to..
http://www.codeproject.com/docview/cpropertyview.asp
Is there a way of automatically updating bookmark links as well? Or is this happening on the server while I am typing this and the link will become valid after a few hours?
PS Great work..

Just a hopefully simple one. When viewing a page of comments that may contain 5,10 or 25 comments, I would like to be able to view 'ALL' comments for a thread as they may wrap from 'page' to 'page'. Would it be possible to mark a comment and say, 'Make this comment the one at the top of the page' and in this manner I would be able to possibly view all comments for a thread at one time.
Thanks.
Chris
