Hello Folks,

I am an individual developer wanting to boost my productivity. Which add-ons to Visual C++ would you recommend and how pricey are they for a single commercial license?

Andy, by now I think you realize that this is almost a religious question. Fortunately, even the commercial (non-free) tools usually have a trial period, so you can try them without cost.

Let me know if you find any other nice tools; I am always trying to find ways to be more productive, since (as a consultant) that makes me more valuable to my clients.

I would recommend using plain Visual Studio without any add-on components. Not that I'm telling I just can live well without them — I can compare see certain benefits in this approach. Last versions of Visual Studio are pretty well designed and provide plenty of tools. Adding more would be just distracting, sometimes intrusive or create extra hassles of supporting them. Most good professionals I know prefer working in "clean" environment as well.

I'm not the one who simply don't care. Just the opposite, I like to polish and sharpen the instrument I use to perfection.

Your whole approach seems a bit weird to me. If you had some specific needs or problems in development experience and asked about the tools to help in particular activity, I would understand you. But looking for some add-on solution "just in case"?.. I understand is this is mostly your curiosity though…

Just my opinion based on long intensive experience.

Yes sure. A friend of mine uses Boundschecker and a colleague at work likes Visual Assist X. Of course one can live without them as Visual Studio has been improved tremendously. Would be nice if you could just write "I use X for Y which costs Z $" ;) ...

Sorry I could not. You can get the prices yourself. If I had some products to recommend (there are things I recommend in other fields) I would tell the price.

Sure, I understand it. So, you got my opinion and try to look at someone's else.
My answer is actually motivated, because I saw how people use some tools and saw that it does not really help and in some cases makes experience worse. At least I know the solutions whick make thing "worse", some are here at CodeProject.

My approach is one of the possible approaches.

You can consider formally accepting it because it's working.

Of course, it't up to you. You can look at what others say. I would be curious, too.

I work with Visual Assist X at office & without it at home , i do not feel it affects my productivity.

I can understand it. Adequate working practices can be much more effective. Certain minimalism is not just saving time or money, it's one of the productivity tools itself...
