Which is a better combination: SQL Server 2012 on Windows Server 2008 or SQL Server 2012 on Windows Server 2012?

We’re planning to upgrade from SQL Server 2005 (on Windows Server 2003 R2) to SQL Server 2012. Hence we’re considering moving up to either of the following two OS options:
• Windows Server 2008
• Windows Server 2012 R2

Now my question is which would be a better combination?
A. SQL Server 2012 on Windows Server 2008
B. SQL Server 2012 on Windows Server 2012 R2

It would be very helpful if someone can provide any input on this.

It depends, personally I prefer Windows Server 2008 because it uses less resources.

The requirement is very straight forward. Client has to move up from the existing Windows Server 2003 to any upper version as Microsoft will stop supporting post Jun 2015. Currently, SQL Server 2005 is there in that server.

So, we're considering moving to either Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2012. Along with that, the database will be upgraded to SQL Server 2012.

There is no limit of resources (hardware/software). We can get whatever we propose.

Please let me know if you need any other details.

Well since Win2008 will be on the chopping block too, then go with Win2012 :)

Now we need move to Sql2012 and Windows server 2012.
