How to highlight the selected (clicked) link button?

Normally, there is no a concept of "selection" for a button. It ether has a keyboard focus or not, which is not the same, but the usual visual feedback is just the dotted focus rectangle. Also, you can highlight the state of having a mouse pointer inside the button, having mouse captured as a result of "pressing" on a button/mouse, or different highlight when the button is depressed/released. You can implement any of these effects or their combination, which is fairly common for Web page design. What part of it seems to be a problem?
