Comms errors using USB Serial Adapter.. help wanted

I am maintaining some control software that interfaces via RS232. It works perfectly using a real RS232 port (like motherboard connector) but generates masses of errors when connecting via a USB-RS232 adapter (for example the GUC232A from IOGEAR). I think it must be a timing issue, can anyone shed some light on what I might need to adjust ?
I added a virtual comm port (VSPE) into the mix and it works perfectly.... my code to VSPE ... VSPE to the USB-RS232 and the outside world.

I can only comment: this is a know issue; and it means that the adapter does not really adapt. Inadequate piece of hardware not working up to the spec.
