Preload software onto USB stick

Hi experts,

let's assume a software is ready for shipment. It will be delivered on USB thumb drive. There will be many thumb drives. Therefore the drive manufacturer will preload the data before shipping the drive.

Is there a best practise for transferring the data to thumb drive manufacturers?
Store it in *.iso or *.zip?

Shouldn't your manufacturer be able to tell you, what kind of format suits them best? Ask them, and they will tell you, how they want to handle this.

Both options makes no or little (zip) sense, not matter what anyone "tells you".
I explained the reasonable options in my answer, please see.

ISO usually means a DVD or CD image. Makes no sense to deliver it on a thumb drive.

You have two practical options: 1) deliver installation on a thumb drive, could be either MSI or just executable with many files to be installed; in this case the software can be used after the user performs the installation on a local drive; if the user copies installation itself to a local drive, is is required to work as well, but you may want to use the flash drive as a security key (copy protection); 2) deliver a "life" application which loads from a thumb drive and runs immediately; in this case the user should be able to copy all the content in some valid directory; in this case, your software is required to work immediately as well.

Also, you can use the combination of both possibilities, when a user decides how to use the software, with installation or as a "life", which is usually chosen by somewhat more experienced users who have no problems with creation of link files, adding items to Start Menu, etc.
