I had assumed as much, however I added a virtual comm port (VSPE) into the mix and it works perfectly.... my code to VSPE ... VSPE to the USB-RS232 and the outside world.

Based on this, am I more likely to succeed with 2003 or 2005 ?
Tht's probably impossible to answer without trying it... but i'll ask anyway.
