A couple of years ago, I was one of the people that thought they needed a smart phone. So upgraded from my Samsung E250 to an Samsung Omnia i900. For the first couple of days i thought that it was the greatest decision ever, touchscreen, reasonable camera, 16Gigs of total storage, etc,etc,.....
After the first week I thought to myself, I bought the thing, I'm bored with the games, so what can I use it for, other then the occasional call? The answer to the question was, absolutely diddly squat, zilch, nada, nothing.
It's now three years later the phone is lying in a box at home somewhere and I am using my Samsung E250.
IMHO, I believe that +- 90% of smartphine owners (just like I was) want to own a fancy gadget that can do loads of useless crap. Yeah, Yeah, Blacberry I hear, BBM, I hear, to which I say the following. If you are constantly sending BBM's then you should rather phone the person and get the info you want or go and speak to them in person.

I reluctantly got a hybrid replacement recently, with a touchscreen and normal buttons after my previous trusty mobile telephone met it's maker by falling out of my pocket, onto a rock, then into the water while I was out fishing.
In my opinion the whole gadgetry obsession is putting us one step closer to living suspended in sacs of fluid with a giant computer feeding off our bioelectric output. Another brick in the wall as Roger Waters might say.
I'm all for a return to carrier pigeons, smoke signals and bits of parchment in bottles hurled hopefully into the sea.

I see them, phone mounted on their hips in a quick-access holster - looking sooooo important.
I further see them constantly grabbing the phone and looking at it. Twiddling. Then returning it to its dock.
I know there thougths:
"I'm important and need to be in touch with everyone I know because they need me" (or is it the other way around?)
"I've no interpersonal skills - at least I can play games"
"Please - I'm lonely - someone text me and validate my existence"
A lifestyle dependent upon battery life and roaming charges.
How different Brave New World would have been - Huxley would have used the cell phones instead of Soma . No one, of course, would have believed him at the time - just too ridiculous to believe. Actually, it still is.

Generally, only google - the small screen makes significant surfing wait for later.
And I can't be Arrr-Jim-Me-Ladded with Farrrrcebook on phone or PC.

I tend to use an App for specific stuff if I can find a decent one.
For example football scores / news, cricket scores, Facebook / Twitter, Wikipedia, ebay, Dilbert,
I use apps for all of those rather than a browser. If there were apps available for other things then I would probably use those too.

I don't have a smart phone, I don't need one and I don't intend to change that any time soon. Ok, I know I'm being boring, but up to now nobody really could tell me what I need a new expensive toy for and so I manage quite well without. Let others waste their time and money scrambling after one hype after another.

I have a cell phone (due to my wife's insistence).
However, upon initiation,
- I had our account had texting disabled.
- I had our account had internet access disabled.
- I keep my phone off, unless I'm expecting a call or occasionally make one
It's only a damn telephone - why have so many made it a way of life ? ? ?

Phones that have very little to do with phone calls are very much appreciated.
Phones are the very invention ever, they sit on your desk or in your house and yell at you until you answer them.
Text messages give a polite little "Message for you, when you're ready, sorry to disturb" and then keep quite until you want to deal with them.
E-mail even better on a phone, doesn't even bother you at all, just wait until you have some time to see if there are any there.
There are of course lots of features I don't use, but I don't get my service provider to turn them off in case I accidentally use them.

Hold on right there. It's not a telephone at all. Sure, you can make phone calls with it if you really wish, but smart phones are realy small computers that are mostly used for things like listening to music, reading e-mail or news, playing games or browsing the internet. And texting.

I got one with the biggest screen I could find, HTC something or other. It makes an excellent reader, the screen is JUST large enough to be able to read from, I can carry a number of books on trips AND it fits in a pocket.
Occasionally I do make a phone call and I think I turned on the data once (by mistake) and I will probably upgrade to a W7 phone this year, my son want the reader and the library.

Hook up my smartphone to my laptop through bluetooth and access the internet on my laptop. Just making it a little more smarter with good display. And this way, I didn't bother getting a dedicated internet connection for my laptop
