Instead of a big blow out, they give us the week after Christmas off

I miss having that week off! Now I get Christmas Day and New Year's Day off...that's it. Although they usually let us sneak out early on the Eves.

Sadistic managers with the intent of supporting their 'favorites' might even make and force their scapegoats to keep scrubbing their asses on the chair even on the XMas and New Year.
There are a lot of such bad mongers at least in the part of the world.

The only hitch to the affair was that the bar was closed while speeches and presentations were going on. We started with over 1200 people, but by the time the bar re-opened it was down to less than 500.

then yes, we do. Typically someone at work will organize some kind of party and our company is willing to say it's a company party. Although, it's up to us to organize and pay for and not on company time. Sometimes, some of the management will kick in some money of their own...since we don't get any kind of Christmas bonus, special gifts, or...well...we don't get anything special.
Wait! We get Christmas eve and Christmas day off!

Yes, except it is a stable job, I've rasied my kids as a single Dad and needed the stability. It is a job, has benifits, and pays well. That's my criteria. Now I'm older and for us, jobs are harder to find.

Oh yes, me too, and now I'm over 50 the grass on the other side looks greener every year, but not for me. But I have one kid in Uni and the other going soon, so I am stuck here till I retire. We do complain a lot, but I've worked at much worst places. The department gets 20 Euro a head for our party, and maybe half of us turn up, so it's a good deal.
Once we all toddled along to a Christmas do, and the buffet was all spread out under plastic, so we could see it and not eat. We had to wait till all the bosses had made their speeches. After 1 hour of speeches I had to go and get my kids from the childminder. No buffet for me.

We organise something ourselves and get £10 each towards it from the company. But it has to be a group thing.

Yup - we have an unofficial party. They also sometimes do pot luck, which I may actually be able to go to this year. Nothing funded by the company, although we do get pizza lunches now and again for other reasons. Pay checks are nice to get...

We used to have a Christmas party, but it was discontinued about 8 years ago because not enough people were interested, i.e. showed up.

Well they call us all to the main isle and we select from a pile of gifts (videos, clock radios, and the like).
My manager is bringing in lunch Friday.
That is about it.

Yep, "my" company takes care of their employees; good food, plenty of drinks, "better half" invited, some business partners also invited, cheesy disco-mobile...

Nope but we get £20 worth of vouchers for M&S, usually spend this on a meal from M&S on Christmas Eve.
